Reports from states, that already have raccoon rabies, indicate that many more domestic animals and people are be- ing exposed to this strain than with fox rabies. All strains of rabies vi- rus in North America are very similar. The main dif- ference is in the primary host involved in maintain- ing and spreading the in- fection. Raccoons are the primary host for raccoon rabies. As of May 1, no cas- es of raccoon rabies have been reported in Ontario. Fox rabies can cause ra- bies in a raccoon but "rac- coon strain rabies" has not been seen in Ontario. Rac- coon rabies is present in New York state along the Niagara River and close to the St. Lawrence River. Vaccinating your animals on the farm means less risk to your family and visitors, and to your animals. It is good practice to vaccinate all animals that have regular and close contact with hu- mans. The lifestyles of cats and raccoons are very similar. and their paths frequently cross. Many raccoons have dens in barns. Barn cats will be a significant risk on your farm should raccoon rabies become established in Ontario. Barn cats are ~ difficult to catch, they tend to arrive from un- known sources and are not my TTT oh terribly social; yet their risk to family, visitors and other farm animals cannot be ignored. It is important to monitor and control farm cat numbers and to vaccinate them all. Talk to your veterinarian about practical ways of vaccinat- ing this special risk group. Many farmers have their cattle vaccinated on a regular schedule and it 1s good insurance. The vac- cine against fox rabies is the same vaccine that will be used should raccoon ra- bies enter Ontario.
