JB a --_ Race needs 'revamping': organizer A "revamping" might be what's needed to boost the fundraising capability of the annual Canoe the Nonquon event, says one of its long-time organiz- ers. Joan Scott said rising. costs and fewer partici- pants mean not as much money is going toward the Scugog Shores Museum, beneficiary of the race. "Our insurance for that day alone is over $500," said Mrs. Scott in describ- ing the high over head for the event, the longest- running canoe race in the province. "If we can clear over $2,000, we'll be doing extremely well." This year saw 94 canoes entered in the Nonquon event, which was held Saturday under beautiful sunny skies. That's in keeping with a trend that shows the ranks of participants growing year to year, but 'still down from the race's hey day, when it attracted more than 200. The race has run con- tinually here for 28 years. "We are still, as far as I know, the largest race in Ontario," said Mrs. Scott. "We are certainly the longest-running." She said all aspects of the race need to be exam- ined if its profitability for the museum cause is to be improved. Serving you for 42 years. 'ROBERT G. She said that perhaps more of a concentration on the recreational class -- far and away the biggest draw for competitors -- should be stressed more in future years. There's also a need to attract young competitors. Still, there are some who really come through for the museum, said Mrs. Scott: "We are really grateful for people like (Ward 3 Councillor) Ken Gadsden, who raised $500 and entered the race him- self." That's the largest amount raised, said Mrs. Scott.
