"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 4, 1996 -5 CCPS teacher IS honored with Marilyn Adams award by board Cartwright Central School's Sharon Hopkins has received the ultimate tribute from her peers. Mrs. Hopkins, who teaches Grade 1 and 2 class at the Blackstock school, was named recipi- ent of the Marilyn Adams Award for her significant contributions to elemen- tary education when the Durham District Ontario Public School Teachers Federation held its annu- al meeting in Whitby last week. Word of the prestigious award came as a shock to Mrs. Hopkins, who has spent 10 of her 15 years in the classroom at Cartwright. She was one of many nominees for the annual honor, and her name was put forth by her Cartwright col- leagues. "When they nominated me, I was speechless," she said while taking a break in the classroom Friday morning. oo "It is a prestigious award. I wasn't aware of how special it is until I became involved." The Adams Award is given annually to a teach- er in the Durham system who has made a signifi- cant contribution to the field of primary and junior education, and to the development of children through child centred pro- grams. Those programs should be aimed at encouraging and facilitating change, growth and improvement in the education of young children, according to lit- erature from the Durham board. Mrs. Hopkins was rec- ognized for her success in developing and imple- menting "Primary Portfolios" as part of her cooperative learning pro- gram. for the past five years 'she has been involved in learning, prac- tising, teaching and shar- ing with students at Cartwright, and through- out the region. She has been a presen- ter at national and inter- national conferences, and collaborated with other Durham educators in pub- lishing a manual on "Student Evaluation in Cooperative Learning", which will be distributed throughout the region's schools. ¢ Much, much more! meet the staff.
