"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 11, 1996 - 11 Rebounding market is hailed by local realtors By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star The revival of Durham's real estate mar- ket has continued through the first half of the year, with realtors moving more than $329 million worth of property since January. The sustained increase has Durham Region Real Estate Board president Dean West projecting higher sales on into the summer months. That's more optimistic than his comments earlier this year, when he took a wait- and-see approach to ini- tial increases from January to March. "It has been a spring which has seen consider- ably more activity than the first five months of 1995," said Mr. West last week. "Our figures indicate the total dollar volume is up by almost 40 per cent over last year's volume. The economy appears to be posed for continued activity, and we're excited about this trend extend- ing well into the summer months." The board also points IIIT IY DURNAM METAL AH) ps toward statistics that indicate good news for home sellers: The average time a listing remains on the market before selling has been decreasing grad- ually since January, and is currently 49 days. As well, vendors are getting, on average, 96 per cent of their list price. Prices are up between 2 and 4 per cent in most areas of the region except Scugog, where they remain on par with 1995, and in Clarington, where, on average, they're actu- ally down 2.4 per cent. Mr. West said a combi- nation of factors, includ- ing low interest rates and eager first-time buyers, are helping sustain the renewed real estate mar- ket here. "It appears first-time home buyers are still a major factor in the buoy- ant spring market," he said. "An active market is allowing home owners to sell their existing home and to make the move up to a larger one."
