Tr "A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 11, 1996 - 15 THE FIRST permanent white settler in Cart- wright was George Hall who came from Ireland in 1831 and settled on two acres he cleared on the eastern half of lot 23, conc. 5 in 1833. The present village of Blackstock was originally called Tooley's Corners. Tooley built and operated a hotel on land where the cenotaph is now located. It was torn down and the war memorial was built on the site in 1920. The community later changed its name to Williamsburg and then in 1887 to Blackstock, after George Tait Blackstock who was a local lawyer and ran as M.P. At this time the only link with Scugog Island and Reach Twp. was a scow which crossed the western portion of the lake from the Port Perry waterfront to the Island.
