' 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 11, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Teachers call on board for a new sex ed manual By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star High school teachers in Durham Region have called upon the public school board to provide them with materials they say they need to teach their students sex education. A letter from department heads and health teachers from schools throughout the region, including Scugog's two high schools, was received by trustees at their recent meet- ing. It says that a comprehen- sive document on sex education 18 needed. "Sex education is a valuable part of the high school curricu- lum," say the teachers in their letter. They contend that "every teenager is going to learn about sex... We feel strongly that this learning should happen in the classroom rather than on the street or through the media." Teens need to learn about the options available to them, including abstinence and safe sexual practices, say the teach- ers, who argue that the doomed Reduce The Risk curriculum outline contained the informa- tion and techniques necessary to convey those messages. That paper, which was writ- ten in-house by the Durham board and receive approval at the committee level, went down in flames after a concerted lob- bying effort by community members who complained it was too explicit, and would encourage young people to experiment with sex. They contend that the board should teach abstinence. Supporters of Reduce The Risk countered that it was to be used in conjunction with anoth- er board curriculum outline on delaying sexual involvement. When it came to decision time, public pressure won out; the paper was sent to the trash can by a one-vote margin. The teachers noted in their letter that Reduce The Risk had the support of numerous organizations including the Durham's high school princi- pals, the regional health department, and students who took part in a field test. Now the board is going back to the drawing board. It has commissioned staff to come up with a new document over the summer. Trustees voted to receive the teachers' letter, and let them know about the new doc- ument being written. Sex education is mandated Ministry of Education, by the province. The first set of games was can- celled due to field condi- tions. The games are a series of relay races played while riding ponies, such as rid- ing around a set of bend- ing poles and handing off a baton to the next rider. Points accumulate over the season with the final- ists going on to compete at the C.N.E. The "A" team of Lisa Al- loway, Carly Hare, Ten- nille Matthews and Beth Murray were first for the day. The "B" team made up by Emily Cudmore, Adam Hancock, 'John Hancock, and Katie Mur- ray came in second. The Masters team of Jamie Al- loway and Lisa Reid was combined with two players from Prince Ed- ward County Pony Club and came away with a third place ribbon. Lisa Reid has taken on the job of coaching the "A" and "B" teams this year. Lisa is a young woman with many years experi- ence at PPG and competed last summer in Kentucky at International Prince Philip Games. Peter Reid will be ring steward for all the meets this season.
