22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 1, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Sr |&(O) EY MN &IDILI LSS I AV ORTS The Greenbank Gamblers made a big push in the league standings as they played three of the top teams in the tough Oshawa City League and came out with three consecutive victories. Tuesday night at Durham Fields saw the Gamblers shut out the previously unbeaten Oshawa Heat by a 4-0 score. Not only did the Greenbank squad end the unbeaten streak of the league champion Heat but Gambler hurler By- ron Baranieski tossed a no-hit gem at the Oshawa club. Baranieski was in complete control throughout the game and claimed eight strikeout victims. The Gambler attack was led by Chris and Rich Burkholder, Greg Newell and hits. Thursday night saw Jim Chilvers and Bryon Baranieski team up to set down the Oshawa Double "B" Juniors as they only allowed four hits to the Oshawa club enroute to a 9-2 Green- bank win. Once again the Gambler bats were hot as they collected 13 hits off Ryan Martin and John Sharpe. + Trevor Till, Paul Goreski, and the Burkholder brothers had two hits each during the game, with Brian Till driv- ingin three runs. Sunday afternoon saw the Scarbo- rough Royals visit Ianson Park in Greenbank and the Gamblers (who had an early 6-0 lead) held on to edge out the Royals by a final 7-6 score. Jim Chilvers started the game and was going strong when he was hit on the left shin by a Dave Hambly line drive in the bottom of the third inning. Baranieski came on to finish the game but the hard hitting Royals had men on John Butler who each collected a pair of Gamblers pick up three big victories second and third in the seventh when Baranieski got the final out on a fly ball to left field. Chilvers had back to back doubles and had driven in three runs before he left the game courtesy of the line drive off his shin. Don Beaton had three hits and Chris Burkholder and Paul Gore- ski each contributed a pair of hits. The - three wins brings the team record to seven wins against a single loss on the season and puts the Gam- blers in a tie with the Oshawa Heat for first place. | The Greenbank squad does not play at home this week as they travel to Da- vigville Park in Toronto on Thursday night to meet Toronto Chikin-Deliin an 8 p.m. game. The weekend sees the Gamblers off to the Baltimore Tournament on Satur- day and Sunday with the N.A.F.A. Tournament in St. Catharines the fol- lowing weekend (June 21, 22, 23). The Merchants first game of the week was on Mon- day, June 3 in Newmarket. This game was one of the Merchants best team efforts of the year as they came away with a 3-2 win. Newmarket got off to a fast start as they picked up two runs in their half of the first in- ning but then the Merchant defense lead by the steady pitching of Marshal McQuade shut them down the rest of the way. Meanwhile the Merchant of- fense picked up a run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to seal the victory. Hitting for the Merchants were, Carl Phoenix with a triple and a walk, Jason Best with a single and a walk, Brad Shanley with two walks, Mike Phoenix with a single, Marshal McQuade with two triples, Ryan Williamson with a single and Doug Short with a triple. The Merchants second game of the week was at home on Thursday, June 6 as they played host to Oshawa. The Merchants were keeping the game close up until the fourth inning when Oshawa grabbed hold of the lead and would never relinquish it. Oshawa picked up seven runs in the fourth and fifth inning to take the game by a 7-0 score. The Merchant offence was held to only one hit and that was a triple by Jason Best while Jason Logan and Ian Shrigley picked up a walk each. Mat Kay pitched a strong game until the middle innings when he seemed to run out of steam. The Merchants next home game is on Tuesday, June 11 as they have a rematch with Newmarket. Game time is 8:30 p.m. The Merchants will also be hosting a tournament on June 22 with teams coming from Napanee, Cobourg, Newmarket, Scarborough, Woodstock, Belleville and Central Frontenac.
