Wm. Fairley - Minister 11am. Sunday School Provided Il Welcome Bantam Merchants improving This week's write-up is brought to you by Kirby Structures and Green- bank Lions Club. The Merchants partici- pated in their first tourna- ment June 8 and three consecutive games helped them work on batting and defensive skills. There was definite improvement as the day progressed. The Bantams opened the rain delayed tourna- ment against Owen Sound and the game was a pitch- ing duel until the last in- ning, remaining scoreless until then. Owen Sound broke it open in their home half of the last inning to take a 7-0 win. Errors, walks and timely hits gave Owen Sound their chanc- es. Chris Jones pitched the four inning (time-limit) game registering seven strikeouts, 7 walks, 5 hits. Michael Versage got the Merchant's only hit - a sin- gle, while Ryan Hawkins and Ryan McBride each' earned a walk. The Merchants copped their first win in game two against Niagara Falls by a 3-0 margin. Ryan McBride pitched the shut-out, re- cording a one hitter over five innings, no walks and one strikeout. The Mer- chants defence showed some steadiness in this game as, with one excep- tion, all put-outs were re- corded by fielders. Mi- chael Versage had a perfect two for two outing, two singles and Ryan Hawkins had one. Ryan McBride, Kevin Duncan and Jim Edwards all were issued one free pass. The Merchants closed out the tournament against a competitive Jar- vis team and lost 2-0; both runs being unearned. Clay Brown pitched the four in- ning time-limit game, posting three hits, no walks or strikeouts. Both Jarvis runs were scored on errors. The Jarvis pitcher shut down the Merchants' offense though, limiting them to one single (Ryan Hawkins), no walks and he struck out nine. 'I'he team had hoped to travel to Bramalea for a double-header on Sunday, but were rained out. Insured Guaranteed Bantams travelled to Richmond Hill to face the Bantams for the second time this season. Despite losing 6-1, there was an improvement over the last outing. The score 18 not in- dicative of the game, as the Merchants led 1-0 for two innings before Rich- mond Hill tied the score in the third. The game re- mained at a 1-1 deadlock until the bottom of the sixth, when Richmond Hill broke it open, scoring five runs on a combination of errors and hits. Again, quiet bats plagued the Bantams as there were only two hits- by Michael Versage and Chris Jones. Ryan Haw- kins scored our only run as he walked and scored on a hit by Chris Jones. Derek Tindall and Brad Mon- sma each earned a walk. Ryan McBride pitched, facing 30, giving up six. hits, three walks and striking out six.
