= "A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 18, 1996 -9 United Way won't join any workfare boycott: board Durham Region's Unit- ed Way fund has branded reports it will boycott agencies that take part in the province's so-called workfaré program 'cate- gorically untrue". "The notion that United Way could or would de- fund an agency for partici- pating in workfare or di- rect an agency's decision in this regard would be a clear departure from Unit- ed Way's fundamental commitment to the auton- omy of their fund agen- cies," said board of direc- tors president Chris Mendes last week. "Unit- ed Way funds agencies based on need and perfor- mance, according to clear- ly established criteria." United Way of Oshawa- Whitby-Clarington, which also funds numerous agencies in Scugog and throughout the region, raises more than $3 mil- lion each year. It funds more than 200 programs delivered by over 40 separ- ate agencies. The organi- zation's statistics show that through its funding more than 80,000 Durham residents will receive some sort of assistance or benefit this year. The announcement its directors made Wednes- day (June 12) was similar to that made by Metro's United Way. The denials were sparked by Canadi- an Union of Public Em- Garden Club has meeting By Angela Willis The Pine Ridge Garden Club met at the Nestleton Hall on June 4. The guest for the evening was John Vandenberg who gave an interesting presentation on how to grow and care for Irises. The winners of the monthly competition, which was an Oriental de- sign, were: First - Grace Bajema and second - Fran Binns. The members of the gar- den club donated a tree to be planted in the centre of the large flowerbed out- side the main entrance of the Community Hospital. We thank David Petrie for planting this for us. Mem- bers planted flowers at the hospital and Nestleton Hall. The next meeting will be July 2, starting with a barbecue at Angela Willis' home. This is our annual Flower, Rose and Vegeta- ble Show and entries should be taken to the hall at6 p.m. ployees (CUPE) president Sid Ryan, who said fund- ing should be denied agen- cies who take on workfare laborers. The workfare program was unveiled by the pro- vincial government last week. It will require able- bodied welfare recipients with no kids to perform work for their benefits. Durham United Way's executive director Cindy Murray said she doesn't want her agency.to be caught in a struggle be- tween the government and unionized labor. "I hope United Way doesn't get caught in the middle of and get hurt by a debate as to whether or not workfare is right or wrong," she said. "Our concern for United Way is a continuing commitment to ensure that the very needed programs and ser- vices delivered by funded agencies continue to be provided to the communi- ty in a highly-efficient fashion." Kevin Hansen and Shawn McClure were at Utica Farm Equipment on the weekend to have their Es- pom Derby cars looked at. The cars had to be in- spected prior to this weekend's big event.
