"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 18, 1996 - 13 Lung Association issues advisory While outdoor air pollu- tion is very visible on smoggy days, it's the rare- ly visible indoor air pollu- tion that can present a greater health risk to peo- ple, including more than 10 per cent of children who have breathing problems. During June's Clean Air Month, the Lung Associa- tion is stressing that im- proving the air quality in homes could improve indi- viduals health and de- crease the risks of lung disease, especially among people with pre-existing breathing disorders. "Millions of adults and children live every day with breathing problems, which can be worsened by indoor and outdoor air pol- lution," said Janet GeorgiefY, executive direc- tor of the Lung Associa- tion Durham Region. Poor air quality is also resulting in increased hos- pital admissions and makes breathing more dif- ficult for people with lung disease, asthma and those with allergies. Kach week nine Canadians die as a result of asthma and more than 31,000 lives are claimed by lung disease each year. Respiratory disease is the third lead- ing cause of death in Cana- da. "The most important ac- tion people should take to eliminate air pollution in the home is to identify and eliminate the sources," said Mrs. Georgieff, "and make sure that they have adequate ventilation throughout their homes." Among the most obvious indoor air pollutants are tobacco smoke, organic gases released from many household products, wood burning fireplaces, pesti- cides, biological contami- nants, and engines left running in attached gar- \ . ages or sheds. Environ- mental tobacco smoke can cause lung cancer in non- smokers, and respiratory problems and infections in children less than 18 months old. ' 2 r smoke 1s a known trigger for asthma attacks. "For some people many other common sources in the home can cause breathing difficulty," Mrs. Georgieff said. "Air condi- tioners, furry pets, im- properly vented kitchen and heating appliances, newly installed carpets, drapes and ' upholstery, dry cleaning fumes, as well as the aerosol mist of personal care and house- hold cleaning products, can also be sources of irri- tants." Common symptoms of people suffering from in- door air pollution include dizziness, nausea, fre- quent headaches, allergic reactions, skin or eye dis- comfort, and difficulty breathing. The Lung Association is helping residents clear the air through its environ- mental health program, C.ANN. DO - The Move- ment For Clean Air Now.
