| 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 18, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" After several months in decline Welfare takes upswing in region By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star After nine months of continual decreases in On- tario's Social Assistance caseload, the numbers have taken an upwards turn the past two months. The nine months of con- tinual decrease was un- precendented, according to Community and Social Services minister David Tsubouchi. April statistics show an additional 408 households or 1,827 individuals on welfare than in March. May figures show another additional 3,500 house- holds relying on social as- sistance. In April a total of 612,325 households, rep- resenting some 1,217,883 people were receiving so- cial assistance. A total of 292,500 households or 519,500 received general welfare. And additional 319,825 were receiving longer term assistance through family benefits. Diners' car stolen in Port People out for a bite to eat in Port Perry last week got a nasty surprise: Someone stole their car while they dined. Durham Regional Police said the 1986 Chrysler had been parked behind the Royal Bank on Queen St. between 5 and 6 p.m. Friday (June 14). When the owner returned, it was gone. In other news, a 1990 GM pick-up and a trailer with two Polaris watercraft were stolen from a Water St. address over night Saturday (June 15). Value is estimated at $35,000. Q May- figures show 615,991 households, rep- resenting some 1,222,913 people receiving social as- sistance, 296,000 of those households relying on general welfare. "The welfare system has had some time to ad- just to our reforms," Mr. Tsubouchi said. He added that there is a need to further the reform system to help people break the cycle of depen- dency on welfare. "That's why we are go- ing to be introducing man- datory work for welfare later this month," he add- ed. Even though the case- loads have gone up the past two months, the min- 1ster said heis still encour- aged by the fact that close to 123,000 people have stopped relying on social assistance since June of last year.
