After losing the Oshawa Tournament to the Oshawa BB Juniors, the Port Junior Merchants returned on Monday night to play them in a league game. The out- come was never in doubt as the Merchants scored five runs in the first three innings and took control of the game with timely hitting, good defense, and strong pitching. The final score was a 5-1 victory for the Jun- 1or Merchants. Chad Venning was the winning pitcher - striking out three, walking two, allowing two hits and one earned run in the five innings he worked. Sheldon Hebert came in relief, striking out four, allowing two hits and no earned runs. The competition between these two teams building up to the Eliminations will be intense, and this win was sweet revenge for the loss the day before in the championship round of the Oshawa Tournament. The RBI contributors were Duane Empringham, Aaron Harrison, Jason McBride, Todd Smart and Darrell Vander Slagt. On Thursday night the tough Oshawa HEAT men's team visited Port Perry and this was one game that the Bricknell family had a hard time deciding who to cheer for. As a large group of fans can attest to, this game turned out to be a great pitching duel between Brad Bricknell for the HEAT and Sheldon Hebert for the Port Juniors. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the game was still scoreless, and with two our Todd Smart was able to reach first on a single, Brad Moase also reached base safely on a walk and due to a passed ball, runners were at first and third when Duane Empring- ham came to the plate to hit a timely RBI single and win this game 1-0 against one of the top men's teams in the league. Sheldon Hebert pitched a complete seven inning game, striking out 13, walking one, allowing two hits and no earned runs. This feat included striking out the last six batters in the game. Matt ran the 1,500 metre race in a time of 5:24.8 to beat the previous record of 525.4, set in 1988 by a former Cornish runner Tommy Chambers. Cornish runners fare well at Durham finals Durham Region is divided into eight areas for competition in track and field events to accomodate the thousands of children involved in each age category. On Monday, June 3, Cornish compet- ed in the area #1 meet at Civic Fields, Oshawa against its' counterparts in the northern part of the Durham Region. Our athletes achieved impressive re- sults capturing 37 first place finishes, 12 second place finishes and 12 third place finishes, counting the hurdles meet. We qualified for 51 places in the All-Durham final held on Wednesday, June 12 at Civic Fields. Our intermediate team performed very well in the final achieving excel- lent results in attaining one of the top six rankings in the Durham Region. The following intermediate results are the tops in Durham Region. Hurdles - Taryn Izatt Galloway - third place. 100 m - Stephanie Puckrin - fourth, Jodi May - second, Taryn Izatt Gallo- way - sixth. 200 m - Stephanie Puckrin - third. 400 m - Matt Smart - sixth. 800 m - Wolfgang Palleske - seventh Katie Ansell - third. David Justynski - third. 1500 m - Wolfgang Palleski - place. Katie Ansell - first place. In Field Events: High Jump - Ashlea Jones - fourth ; Russ Brown - second; David Justynski - third; Lorian Collins - first. Lorian Jumped a personal best of 1:40 to win.
