"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 18, 1996 -5 George Rizsanyi gets praise for experiments with new materials By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star A sample of Scugog craftsmanship will be among the all-Canadian line-up of products at an embassy show in Japan later this year. Greenbank guitar mak- er George Rizsanyi has been asked to send along samples of his work by or- ganizers of the show, and he's glad to take part. Business man Robert Sprules, founder of the Muskoka Fine Watercraft canoe . company, is orga- nizing the show to place the spotlight on Canadian woodworkers and arti- sans, said Mr. Rizsanyi, who's done repair work for Mr. Sprules. He said orga- nizers have selected him because of the quality of his work, and his Canadi- an content. The 41-year-old guitar maker uses as much do- mestic wood as possible in crafting his fine instru- 183 Queen Street, Port Perry ments in his small Cragg Rd. shop. "They're wood freaks, and they're real national- ists,"he said of the show organizers. "That's one of the reasons they really liked what I was doing: My willingness to experi- ment." While he still employs rosewood and other mate- rials traditionally used in guitar making, Mr. Riz- sanyi has, over the years, branched out to try local woods. The benefits, he said, are two-fold: Some lo- cal wood can make fine in- struments, and he can pro- duce them without using endangered species. "Me and my sons and their sons could make gui- tars for the next 1,000 years from the bush here," said Mr. Rizsanyi. "Just the windfall even. "There's wood out there that's just as beautiful as India and Brazil." Mr. Rizsanyi has experi- (905) 985-8234 Mon., Wed. & Sat. 9:30am to 5:30pm Thurs. & Fri. till 9pm Sundays 12 noon to Spm L ON Dav Of George Rizsanyl with a few of his hand-crafted instruments. in a products show that's bound for Japan later this year. mented with elm, yellow poplar, maple, apple... even lilac. The result is distinctive-looking instru- ments with a bright, clean sound. He's hoping the unique nature of the guitars will catch the eyes of players in AN Settlement House - SHOPS _ Asia, a huge market where affordable instru- ments are sought. Any large-scale orders would obviously place a strain on a one-man operation that produces, on average, 25 guitars a year. But Mr. Rizsanyi will take it as it comes. "I'll try and accommo- date them," he said. "I don't want to make a lot of stuff but if it comes down to yea or nay, I will. I may have toexpand." The show will see Mr. Rizsanyi's instruments on display in Japan this fall.
