The Selection Commit- tee announced the 1996 Ontario Dairy Youth Scholarship Winners. Youth from all six dairy brteds are eligible for this a®Ward, which is funded by the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund and the Onta- rio Holstein Branch. Selection criteria is pri- marily based upon the ap- plicant's agricultural ackground. Key compo- nents are 4-H and Junior Farmer involvement, com- munity activities and fu- ture goals within the agri- cultural industry. Four scholarships, of $500 each, are awarded annually. Two are pre- sented to students en- rolled at a college or uni- versity, in an agricultural diploma program, while the other two are awarded to students completing an agricultural degree. 1996 Degree Winners: Carolyn Barkey, Blackstock Carolyn is entering her third year at the Universi- ty of Guelph where she is majoring in Animal Sci- ence. Besides being active- ly involved with her family dairy, Carolyn has com- . pleted 32 4-H projects within Durham County. She has competed several times at the Royal Agricul- tural Winter Fair and has won several awards for her judging and showman- ship skills. In 1995, she represented Ontario on the Garfield Weston 4-H United Kingdom 4-H ex- change for seven weeks. At the University of Guelph, Carolyn has been active within her graduat- ing class and the Ontario Agricultural College. This upcoming school year sees her as the President of the Student Federation of the Ontario Agricultural Col- lege. Upon graduation, she foresees herself work- ing in the area of animal nutrition. Brenda Green, Wainfleet Brenda has just com- pleted her third year also in an Animal Science pro- gram at the University of Guelph. Originally en- rolled in Veterinary medi- cine, she now hopes for a career within the Animal Nutrition or A.l. indus- tries. Brenda has completed 27 4-H projects and is a skilled judge and showper- son. She has competed asa member of the Canadian National Team at a Pen- tathlon Dairy Event in England. As well, she has been both a Diary Princess and Fair Queen in Niaga- ra and has been a Figure Skating coach. At the Uni- versity of Guelph, Brenda is a member of the Judg- ing Team and is active in several intramural sports. Tracy Rowswell, Elgin Tracy is entering her second year of the Veteri- nary Technology Program at St. Lawrence College in Kingston where she is pre- paring for a career involv- ing either embryo transfer or animal nutrition work. Besides being active on the family farm, Tracy is a Sunday School teacher and was chair of her high school's Enviro Fair. Within the 4-H pro- gram, Tracy has been in- volved with the Lombardy Dairy Calf Club for five years. and the Chaffey's Lock Horse Club for two, completing a total of 13 projects. She has compet- ed in several county and provincial 4-H Judging and Go-For-The-Gold competitions and has trav- eled to Alberta on an ex- change. Paul Lowry, Kincardine Paul has completed his first year in the Agri- Business Diploma Pro- gram at the University of Guelph, where he is hop- ing to broaden his knowl- edge about the agricultu- ral industry and its new technologies. Paul is in- volved with both Junior Farmers and 4-H within Bruce County and is an avid hockey player. His work upon the fami- ly dairy and cash crop has allowed him to appreciate the rural life and he hopes to buy a farm of his own af- ter graduation.
