"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" As much as five inches fell Wednesday Downpour creates havoc for Scugog | roads and homes By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Last week's heavy rain caused considerable dam- age to several roads and homes in the township. Heavy rains, estimated at more than five inches, fell early Wednesday morning causing fairly considerable damage to arearoadways. The township's roads crew was repairing dam- age to roads from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening, before finding yet more problems Thurs- day. The department worked on the roads Wednesday night until they were safe for travel, according to roads fore- - man Mike Donnelly. Although they had much of the work cleared up the run-off from the storm came to a head in some areas and flowed in over roadways leaving them underwater Thurs- day morning. According to Mr. Don- nelly the heaviest hit are- as of the township were in the northwest end where the roadways were "carved up pretty badly." Cragg Road in Greenbank and Marsh Hill Road in the Epsom, Utica area both sustained heavy damage. f There were areas near the 12th and 13th conces- sion where one-kilometre sections of road were cov- ered by about 20 inches of water, Mr. Donnelly said. Raymond Kerry, who lives east of Greenbank on Cragg Road said he at- tempted to leave his drive- way just prior to 9 a.m. to find the portion of road- way in front of his drive- way washed away. Travel wasn't the only hassle for area residents as many found their base- ments flooded and leak in their roof. Mr. Rooter Plumbing also found themselves on the road all day Wednes- day and Thursday as homeowners found their basements flooded. Most of the problems seemed to be with weeping tiles that simply became clogged and unable to keep up with the amount of rain that fell, said Carol Bennett, of Mr. Rooter. She said few calls were from Port Perry residents, but rather several from Cawker's Creek home- owners as well as other in- dependent developments and out of town residents. While the impact of the storm was powerful, she said that many of the plumbing systems should have been checked earlier and the problems correct- ed before the storm and the majority of the prob- lems would have been avoided. this section of Cragg 2 wh GEO he ¥ Rye z & bo. 3 RET Rg Te BT Ca Se x a Nog oh RE 1 + : yy Stonemoor Day Care We NOW have openings Port Perry 985-0800 Uxbridge 852-3510 grrynemeop 7 ?
