Kelly Lown Editorial Comment Wd How far right \ IS right? Ba It's interesting, during these dog days of summer, to watch as conservative political parties debate on their policies. : In America, where Republicans are meeting to give Bob Dole the nod as their presidential candidate, the show is being run by the Christian Coalition, a right-wing group whose organizational skills and fearsome conservative agenda makes Mike Harris and the Ontario Tories look like Commies. ; They want to cut off welfare for single teen mothers, and chase out immigrants for a start. Then the real work begins. Here in Canada, it's young Progressive Conservatives who are veering to the right, and they're urging the party hierarchy to adopt such policies as tax cuts coupled with deficit reduction, phasing out of the Canada Pension Plan and employment equity, adoption of | private health care, and reinstatement of the death penalty. : It's understandable that Canada's Tories are scrambling to define themselves and their party. After their implosion in the last election, when Canadians expressed their venom for a party that had betrayed them, a clear message is necessary. And with Preston Manning and the Reformers stumbling so badly as of late, the time is right to woo those who want a conservative party with ideas they can relate to. Even the federal Liberals have taken on a harder edge, and will continue to redefine themselves in fiscal matters. , - The question is, how far right is right? It appears the politicians are betting that going all the way is the key. But the electorate -- and the first test will be in November -- ultimately decides. ...Right? 3 REMEMBER 45 YEARS AGO Thursday, August 16, 1951 Congratulations to Georgia Brock of Port Perry High School, who has just completed two weeks of leadership training at the Ontario Athletic Training Camp on the shores of Lake Couchiching.
