Ta presenting to thé Public's Prospectus of the Port Perry "Standard, itis neces- sary and proper te say a fow words with respect to tho future course of the Journal, and the objects and aims which the Pub- | lisher has in view. % Regarding Politics, it may be said, that the country is now in a state of quiescence + and this position of affsirs will probably continue until the settlement of the qu-s- tion of Confederation, Under these circum- stances, the Publisher, while ob.erving a strictly neatral and independent course-- committing himself to no side--ivill reserve the right of commenting on the various questions which may arise, and reproduce extracts from the press generally, bearing on botk sides ot the topics under conside- ration. Tho Standard, then, whilst non-poli- tical, will be made to subscrve the various and useful purposes of a Family Newspaper. Articles and extracts calculated to advance the cause of Religion, Morality and General Knowledge, will be the staple of its co- lumas --ond by this means, and by a careful attention to the typography and general appearance of the shnet, the Publisher Lopes to lay before his readers a Weekly Paper every way deserving of public support and confidence. While advocating the expediency and utility of cultivating amicable relations with the neighbouring Union, the Standard will, on all occasions, -laculcate a spirit of loyalty aad attachment to the Mother Country : regarding the connection exist- ing between Britain apd her North Ame- rican Provinces as the surest safeguard of the rights, privileges and freedom of the Iatter,--The advantage of the protection of a great and powerful Empire --the migh- tiest of the earth--Is not to be lightly esteemed : and no true subject of Victoria would be willing to exchange it for the doubtful advantage of forming part of a Republic, whose liberties and councils are, in a great measure, dependent on the will of an unrestrained Democracy. As an ndyocate of all that is calculated to advance the Interests of Port Perry und vicinity, the Standard will identify itself with every measure and every individual earnestly devoted to the same. In this connection, correspondences on any qnes- tions affecting the advancement and gress of this locality, will be favourably attended to. The state of the Markets, and the latest Telegrams respecting Local and Roreizy News, will be given, up to the hour of pu lication. i It is trusted that the establishment of a weekly local newspaper, devoted to the | interests of the Village and County, will meet with that countenance and support which will enable and encourage the Pub- lisher to carry out his undertaking to a' successful issue. The first number of the Standard will ap- pear during the second or third week of August. . E. NUNDY. Port Perry, July 30, 1366.
