iS ea "A Family Tradition for 130 Years" Cops find $12,000. 'taken from womah, 72, in phone scam Chalk one up for the good guys. After repeated warnings to locals and providing us with sad stories of lost fortunes to back those warnings up, police here have helped an elderly woman recover money she lost in a telephone scam. _ The Durham Regional Police fraud unit, working in conjunction with RCMP in Montreal and staff at banks here and in Quebec, recovered $12,000 for the 72-year-old Oshawa woman, officers said in a release last week. Police said that between June 28 and Aug. 22 of this year the woman had sent a total of $18,870 to two locations in Montreal after a male caller con- vinced her that she would receive gifts, $100,000 in cash, and a car worth $32,000. The woman was asked to lay out money for "portfolios", police said. The victim did receive several of the so-called portfolios and other articles worth around $1,500, none of which she had any use for, police said. When contacted about the scam, police here were quickly in touch with RCMP and Bank of Montreal officials in Montreal, as well as an Oshawa branch of the Toronto Dominion. They were able to recover $12,000 of the woman's money. Police continue to warn people here about tele- phone scams with a simple warning: If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. The most typical form a scam takes is to offer someone fantastic returns for relatively meagre investments. The scam artists often target seniors, police say.
