"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" L. ETTERS . Es. ee Government is stalling on lights To the Editor: Re: Traffic lights at R.H. Cor- nish P.S. Every time I open this news- paper, I get more and more up- set due to the ignorance shown by our provincial government towards the placing of a lighted ~ crosswalk at R.H. Cre Pub- * lic School and/or traffic lights at the intersection of Old an Road and Highway 7A. Iapplaud our town council for standing up and insisting vehe- mently that this is an issue that gets dealt with. But the blatant disregard for human life shown by our government in this situa- tion as they cite excuses such as cost-cutting, bad planning on the part of the Baa Board of han and not enough traf- fic to warrant placing these lights -it all makes me ll. A boy was killed and a cross- ing guard seriously hurt by a motorist at this controversial Great job! To the Editor: As a sponsor of the Gus Macker 3 on 3 basketball tournament I was very im- pressed with all the hard working volunteers who made this event a success. From the set up to the total clean up it really was, top- notch. To directors Bob Hull and Kennedy Self, your staff and volunteers: thank you for bringing another great sport- ing event to Port Perry. The real winner of this tournament was Muscular Dystrophy. kwwill again sponsor this tournament in 1997, when I hope to see 250 teams. 'Magnificent'... of the Year'.. just some of the remarks being made since the premier showing of Fly Away Home at the Toronto Film Festival fast Thursday night. And for those who haven't heard, Fly Away Home is the movie filmed in and around Scugog Township last summer. It's based on the life of local sculptor, environmentalist and inventor extraordinaire, Bill Lishman of Purple Hill. Bill's face is no stranger tothe Perry Star, but over the past five years he has also cross-walk. A motorist coming down that hill on a foggy morn- ing, can barely make out the bright colored vest and outfit of the traffic guard as he shep- our provincial go vernment, who herds those kids off to school al "feel that we A have a prob- of them sitting ducks. (It is "lem. - amazing we haven't had any more fatalities there since). During the weekends Friday nights especially, in the spring and summer, try crossing Hwy. * 7A from Old Simcoe Rd. or any of the adjacent side streets around R.H&Cornish. It is a non-stop line of cottage traffic that another set of lights (placed at the corner of 7A oe a Simcoe) would help regu- ate. How does the government feel that they are absolved from - helping to solve this problem? Last heard, Highway TAwas a provincial highway, under the MTO's jurisdiction. Even now the lake is badly pol- luted to the point that swim- ming in the lake front beach areais banned. At the present time the sewer lagoon is at capacity and the lake is polluted. That threat will become worse if council car- ries out its plans to build hous- ing only in Port Perry and keep tending R.H. Eventually this narrow and dangerous planning will harm business throughout Port Perry. To choke our beautiful lake with lagoon run-off will do ir- reparable damage to our chil- 7 og grandchildren, cottagers, boaters and businesses. If this is allowed to happen it will take a long time to reverse and cor- rect the damaging process. Although the number of entries was smaller than anticipated, the tournament was successful and laid a solid foundation for the future.
