In wet and drizzly con- Jditions, a well balanced and very hard working Manvers team drew Port Perry to 1-1 tie in their Saturday morning round- robin game making a fifth, tie breaking game neces- sary. Great defense by Greg Beenan, Sean Van Andle and Matt Robertson helped the keeper, Mike Blakey to stop all but five goals against in the whole tournament. Also playing well throughout were Mi- chael Systma, Hassam Baker, Josh Kirk, Gregg Lansow, Adam Lamb, Nick Bronsan, David Low and Tory Goodwin. Adam, TJ and Hassam were each responsible for scoring goals in the tournament. In midfield, Steven Wy- gerde was outstanding throughout the tourna- ment, controlling play and with excellent ball control bringing the ball forward to the crease time after time. In one memorable scrimmage, as Steven slipped on the wet grass, he caught the ball between his legs, then jack knifed up, placing the ball at his feet and continued on through the awestruck op- sing players. pos fifth game on Sunday afternoon was necessary to break a tournament tie with Manvers. This game went into double overtime, before the score was final- ly decided at 2-1 in favor of Port. The Port defense and goalkeeping: was nearly invincible allowing' only one goal on a penalty kick. During the game, Mike Blakey also made a couple of spectacular diving stops in the mud. The first Port goal was scored on a particularly fine effort by TJ Robbins. While everyone on the team played well in this game, mid-fielders Jamie Mouland and Zach Fis made particularly out- standing efforts. They ranged the field from one end to the other control- ling play, getting the ball to forwards and backing up the defense. Their ef- forts inspired the rest of a very tired team that had already played four in- tensely fought games in twodays. With barely a minute to go in the second overtime riod, forward Sean Wil- iams took a pass through a group of defending players and placed it in the corner of net, slipping it past a diving Manvers keeper. This goal was just one of several that Sean scored during the tourna- ment, when all of the Port Perry team made out- standing contributions to team play. Missing from the tour- nament play because of ill- ness or injury were Derek Ellicot, Peter Landry, Matt Vaughn and Paul Chiusolo, players who had helped the Port Re/Max team to their winning sea- son. Coaches Jill and Tim Baranowsky and Wayne Mouland made sure that every player on the team played in each game, as they had all season. Congratulations are in order to this champion- ship team for their fine, sportsmanlike team play and a winning effort ail season.
