Mere months after being told their budget would take a cut in the millions; soon after struggling to arrive at a budget our local trustee said amounts to "butchering" the system, and about a year after Education Minister John Snobelen plots to create a crisis, this happens. This, of course, is the selection of the Durham board as the best in the world by the Carl Bertelsmann Foundation. That body each year identifies an outstanding public institution, and this year education was the focus. It was praise enough when the local board was chosen as the nominee for North America, and as such the best on the continent. It was the coup de grace to win the award, and the $300,000 that comes with it. The irony comes into play when you realize that at home, our school boards are being targéted as inefficient, wasteful, and too costly. Provincial government members have made no secret of their contempt for the public education system, and their intent to tear it down, then erect a bare-bones monument to Coat of Arms claims uttel . thoughtless austerity.
