McClelland Special tothe Port Perry Star A stellar goaltending effort rom Paul Roberts gave the Port Perry ModJacks their second vic- tory of this young Junior C sea- son--a 3-0 whitewash of the Bobcaygeon Bullets Sunday evening at the Scugog Arena. Roberts, in his sophomore sea- son with the green and white was just home from a family va- cation in England. The air or something across the pond must have been just what the doctor ordered for this 21-year- old who kicked aside 22 shots in his first game for the MoJacks this year. % That may not seem like a lot of work, but were it not for Rob- erts' brilliant play, MoJacks easily could have found them- selves trailing by several goals before the game was 10 minutes old. The quick skating and strong forechecking Bullets, coming off a tough 3-1 loss to the Uxbridge Bruins Friday, really had the MoJacks back on their heels in the first 10 minutes of Sunday's contest. But Roberts held the fort, dis- laying a quick-silver glove Poa to pick several pucks out of the air that had red light writ- ten all over them. During one flurry, he was forced to make three difficult saves in a row--all on shots from the top of the face-off circle be- fore his defense finally came to the rescue to clear the puck from harm's way. Bullets out-shot the MoJacks 10-5 in the opening frame, but the green and white was able to weather the storm and finally started to turn things around in the middle frame when they out-shot the visitors by a hefty 15-7. But at the other end of the ice, first year Bullet keeper Jeff Merrick was just as equal to the task as Roberts was in the first stanza. Many of the MoJack shots were of the quality nature, but they were unable to get a puck behind the diminutive Merrick who showed a quick glove hand and the ability to smother re- bounds. Early in the third, MoJacks weathered a nasty storm when forward Ryan Speake took a tripping penalty and decided to give the Bullett player a back of the neck massage with the stick. The result was a costly double minor that severely test- ed the MoJack penalty killing units. This game, which was highly entertaining, looked like it might be headed for one of those rare "double goose-egg" dead- locks as the MoJacks were un- able to buy a goal. They rang one shot cleanly off the post early in t sharp-shooter Kevin Ryle ap- ared to have one in the bag " from 10 feet in front of Merrick. But, he drilled the shot over top of the cage. Finally, with MoJacks on the power play, captain Matt Pyke took things in his own hands at . 8:48. Moving in from the 'off wing," Pyke snapped a wrist shot from a faily sharp angle that found its way between - ¥® Merrick's pads. Vince Farano and Jamie More drew the as- sists. Once they tasted first blood, ModJacks were hungry for more and less then two minutes after Pyke's goal, Rob Simms cashed a rebound from about 15 feet out with a well-placed shot low to the glove side. Speake and Doyle drew the assists. ModJacks were killing a penal- ty just past the mid-point of the period when Bullet coach Jason Staulbaum opted to pull his net- minder for some extra fire- power. MoJack defenseman Troy Verge collared a loose puck just inside his own blue line, turned and fired all in one motion. He was probably the most sur- prised guy on the ice as he watched his shot travel some 100 feet into the vacant Bullet cage. That gave the MoJacks a 3-@lead and some badly needed "msuarance. SLAPSHOTS: MoJack head coach Chic Carnegie was pleased to see his guys come away with thetwo points. "I'm happy to get the win. I thought it was a pretty good ef- fort," he said in the dressing third, then %0m after the game. He was all praise from the work of Roberts in cage, es- pecially in the t period when, in his words, "the score easily could have been 6-0." Carnegie said he didn't have any special message to the troops between the first and sec- ond periods, but he was pleased to see the MoJacks pick up the play and start to take it to the Bullets. "I thought it was a very enter- taining game - good for the fans," he added. Indeed it was, good, solid Jun- ior C hockey entertainment. The Bullets are anything but the push-overs they were in their first two seasons in this League. They skate and move the puck well and if they contin- ue to get goaltending from Mer- rick, they are going to win their share of games this season. Fri- day's loss to Uxbridge was 2-1 until the final minute when the un-beaten Bruins cashed an empty-netter to make it 3-1. Bullets are still looking for their first victory. visit. "This League is going to very There's always been competitive this season," "bad blood" between Carnegie noted. Jacks and the Bruins ModJacks got solid work from the blue line corps in this one with Matt Glenn in his first reg- ular season game showing a willingness to play "in your face" hockey. He should be a good one for the green and white. ModJacks had Chad Kearns in Sunday's line-up. Just how many games he plays this year is tough to assess as he's a first yeargeology student at Lauren- tian University in Sudbury where he had a good chance to crack the line-up of the varsity squad which is ranked first among collegiate teams in Can- ada. Kearns, a Port Perry native, is a big, strong 20-year-old with good wheels under him and he likes the heavy going in the cor- ners and along the boards. He took a regular shift at cen- tre and Carnegie used him . Heron in the game against heavily in tion.
