18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 22, 1996 - SPORTS ModJacks fight for a draw with first place Br by John B. McClelland Special tothe Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks kept their season record a slight notch above 500 Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, thanks completely to a circus netmind- ing performance by Paul Rob- erts. MoJacks were able to creep away with a 4-4 deadlock against the first place Uxbridge Bruins, but were it not for work of the 21-year-old Roberts be- tween the pipes, this game would have been a blow-out for the visitors who came in sport- ing a record of four wins and a draw. 5 "Roberts saved our bacon, that's for sure," said head coach Chic Carnegie in reference to the 47 pucks fired at the Mo- Jack net through 60 minutes of regulation and a five minute OT period. GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES And a gdod number of those shots were \tough ones as time and again the Bruins swarmed the MoJack zone in waves as the defense seemed to collapse in front of Roberts. The tie gives the MoJacks a record of two wins, two defeats and a draw so far in five games. While praising his team for "having the guts" to come back from a 4-2 deficit midway through the third period, Carnegie said there is still much to be learned by his roo- kie-laden squad. They are still in the learning stages," he said, and at times "there is a lack of confidence." MoJacks were coming off a 4-1 drubbing last Thursday night in Lakefield at the hands of the Chiefs, the team they will meet again this Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. Carnegie was less that please® with the Lakefield game, citing a lack of drive and commitment. "You have to have that if youre going to win games in thisleague," he said. Against the Bruins Sunday night, MoJacks opened an early 1-0 lead when sniper Kevin Doyle snapped a shot behind Ryan Unwin on the power play. Mike Pigeau drew the lone as- sist on the rising shot that caught the net on the glove side. ModJacks were able to keep the Bruins off the board in the first, thanks to Roberts and thaaks to some decent penalty killing. But they were only able to hold the Bruins at bay for so long and early in the second, moments af- ter a five minute Uxbridge pow- er play, Mike Nicholson was fi- nally able to get-one past the ModJack goaltender to even things at one each. A = Stu Parish gave Bruins a 2-1 lead late in the second with his team enjoying a man advan- tage. The shot came off a re- bound and again, Roberts had no chance after making the ini- tial stop. Despite being outshot 29-17 after 40 minutes, MoJacks climbed back into a 2-2 tie at 1:23 of the third. Rob Simms did the damage on the power play, sneaking out from behind the Bruin net to shovel in a re- bound. Pigeau and Matt Pyke drew the helpers on thisone. * Midway through the frame it appeared like Bruins were go- ing to put the game on wraps as they clicked twice in the span of 63 seconds with Jeff Ranich un- loading a slap shot from 25 feet out, followed by Nicholson with his second of the game as he was set up alone at the side of the MoJack net. * ANNUAL RATES Rates subject to change without notice SCUGOG FINANCIAL SERVICES A DIVISION OF CRESSBROOK FINANCIAL PLANNING LTD 250 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY "Serving Scugog for Over 15 Years PHONE 985-3832 - no Fees 1989 GMC SI5 - V6, 5 speed, PS, PB,AM/FM --* cassette, VERY 94 Water St., Port Perry We Service All Makes And Models KX96 FM Radio & The Scugog Centre Advisory Board present a COUNTRY REUNION DANCE with Square Dancing Featuring Country Recording Artists: Johnny Burke & the East Wind Band with Gary Hooper Larry Hannah « Ivan Skivinski Skvar at Scugog Centre Community Hall 1655 Reach St. (beside arena) Port Perry Saturday, November 9, 1996 8pm to 1am Tickets $25.00 Couple or $15.00 Single Available At: the Municipal Office, the Arena, Advisory Board Members and User Groups For more info or to order tickets call (905) 985-3686 or 985-8698 {Fund Rae For Scugog Cows) "WIN A TRIP TO NASHVILLE" eauesuns tarensnssreeanses 5.625% CASHABLE....... saxseerivas 3.250% Legionnai first tourn: The action began with vor the Port Legionnaires wa meeting East Gwillimbu- ry Peewees on Friday.
