"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" He's in the swing | Darryl Copithorn is already | an accomplished musician By Heather McCrae Special to the Star At 11 years of age, Dar- ryl Copithorn has already learned hard Work can re- sultin great réwards. Because he earned a top mark of 95 'per cent in Grade 2 Piano earlier this year at the Western Onta- rio Conservatory of Music examination session, the Port Perry boy has been awarded two scholar- ships. The mark was also tops for Grade Two Piano in the province, and across Canada. On Oct. 6 Darryl re- ceived the Ontario Regis- tered Music Teachers As- sociation (ORMTA) scholarship from the Oshawa and District Branch as the annual Awards Recital. And, at another recital last June, the talented young musi- cian was presented the Carol Baker Memorial Scholarship by one of his music teachers, Alissa Smith. On top of this, Darryl has been asked to attend the convocation ceremony in London, where he will receive another scholar- shipon Nov. 16. Darryl's two teachers, -- his mother, Paula, and Mrs. Smith -- feel his ac- complishments are out- standing. "He loves music and really works hard at it," Mrs. Smith, his teacher of four years, said. Mrs. Copithorn is excit- ed about her son's accom- plishments, as well. When Darryl walks across the stage in London Nov. 186, he'll retrace the steps his mother took 16 years ago when she received her teacher's degree in piano from the Western Conser- vatory of Music. Despite his young age, Darryl is accustomed to strutting his musical stuff. Often a guest organist at Port Perry United Church, he was the young- est performer at Pull Out All The Stops, a sold-out organ recital held last July. At that performance he played with John Orde, a local jazz musician. Since their debut the two have developed quite a rapport. Darryl say he was seven years old when he started taking piano lessons. "My mom sat me down at the piano and told me where the basic keys were. After I practiced a bit I started taking lessons with Mrs. Smith and mom," he said. Currently, Darryl is fin- ishing Grade Three piano, and should be ready for the next grade in the new year, his teachers feel. But music isn't the only hobby he enjoys. In the summer he's often at the ball diamond or go- karting with his father, Garry, and in the winter he's playing hockey and snowmobiling. He also takes great de- light in helping his young- er brother, Mark, play on the family's white baby grand piano. Although Darryl isn't sure if he wants to make music a career, the Grade 6 student at R.H. Cornish Public School has a desire to succeed. "Iwant to goas highasI can in piano and organ, and then I'll decide what I want todo," he said. "Or, maybe I'll be a tool and die operator like my dad," he mused. "He can fix anything." When Darryl receives his third scholarship next month in London, he'll be accompanied by his par- ents and grandparents, Clem and Marg Jeffrey, who are well known for their love of music, too. Mr. Jeffrey is currently serving his second stint as the Grand Musician of the Grand Lodge of Ontario in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. It was 20 years ago when Mr. Jef- frey initially served as Grand Musician, delight- ing audiences across the province with his exper- tise on the keys. Both Darryl's music teachers feel it's a special and rare occurrence to have one of their students receive such national ac- claim. "To think a young stu- dent from the small town of Port Perry, can compete nationally, that's really something," said Mrs. Smith.
