More than 400 people took part in the fundraising and proceeds will go towards a second ice pad and paying off the building debt. More than $16,000 was received in pledges and cash during the afternoon event. * Skate-a-thon a success By J. Peter Hvidsten The Port Perry Star Scugog Advisory Board members are more than pleased with the turnout for the Skate-a-thon held at the arena Sunday. According to board mem- ber Marilyn Pearce, "it was an excellent day," with bet- ween 400-500 people, tak- ing part in the event. More than $16,000. was raised during the afternoon skate and they expect to make a net profit of about $10,000 after expenses for the event are paid. Participants were asked to get pledges and skate 100 laps of the arena, and offered prizes for individu- al and team fundraisers. Anyone taking part who raised a total of $100 or more will receive a winter jacket with a skate-a-thon crest to show they partici- pated in the event. "We wanted to give something back to the par- ticipants, something vis- ible in the community," Mrs. Pearce said. Organ- izers expect about 150-200 of those participating will receive jackets. About 75 per cent of the proceeds ($7,500) will be placed in a trust fund and go towards funding of a second remainder will be used to help pay down the $55,000 debt remaining on the con- struction of the Scugog Centre hall. Before the end of the second, each team got an- other goal with Port's com- ing from a series of nice passes from Trevor Lance to David Halward and then to Jeff Tarbotton for the flip into the net. As the game went on, it got rougher as both teams had numerous ehe or two man advantage opportunities. In the third period, this resulted in three power play goals, although only one for the home team with Jeff Tarbotton and J Dane Gray assisting Tre- | vor Lance. With the help of good goaltending by Port's Darcy Stephens, the game ended tied 5-5. . Sunday night, after the Port Perry Skate-a-thon and auction, the Legion- naires travelled to Tren- ton to avenge an earlier encounter that Trenton had dominated. This time the results were to be dif- ferent. True to form, Tren- ton was big and tough as they did all the Scoring in the first period. Down 2-0, Port came out in the sec- ond period and really started to move the puck and show their speed. A turning point seemed to come when Dane Gray made a big hit behind their net, stole the puck, worked it to the point where Gerard Timmers ri- fled a shot that Trenton's goalie bobbled; Joe Schem- bri was there to drive
