RICHARD DREW/PORT PERRY STAR IT'S JUST NUNSENSE: The Scugog Choral Society is gearing up for its pre- sentation of the popular musical comedy Nunsense, which hits the boards at Town Hall 1873 Nov. 21, and continues until Dec. 7. Tickets for the hilarious musical are on sale now at Jayson Callan Music, at 305 Queen St. Seen here in rehearsal are cast members Bobbie Drew (left), Janet Green, and Barb Taylor-Bone. Opponents appeal application From Page 1 Mr. Aldred said in an interview that the commit- tee has "profound" con- cerns about the serving of alcohol at the new facility, and that members are pre- pared for a court battle if that's deemed necessary. "We're quite serious," he said. "In the event the board decided to give them a license, our appeal would have to be on a point of law. "They might make an arbitrary decision to grant the license, at which point we 'would have to go to court," said Mr. Aldred. In his letter to the LLBO Mr. Aldred outlines a number of concerns, including: J The fact that there is no public transit to the site, which may lead casi- no patrons to drink and drive; J A worry that the Island Rd. is overburdened now, and has been the site of a number of fatalities; J The possibility that non-gamblers will con- gregate in the casino lounge, making it a "drink- ing hangout". The commit- tee also "worries that gam- blers could drink heavily and travel local roads; SUBSCRIBE TODAY! Something is happening in Port. Perry and Scugog Township. Mr. Aldred insists throughout that granting a license to the Great Blue Heron is "not in the public interest"; He says that if a license is not denied, it ought to be held back for six months while opera- tions at the new hall are "sorted out". Ron Steiner of World Casinos says that while concerns about the con- sumption of liquor are legitimate, there's no rea- son to believe a license for the Great Blue Heron will result in problems for neighbors on Scugog Island, or elsewhere in the township. He counters Mr Aldred's arguments by saying: J That while there Is no public transit, casino management plans to pro- vide regular bus service to and from the site, and that a good deal of traffic will be charter buses; J He said there will be no liquor served in the bin- go parlor, so concerns over setting a precedent are moot; CROSSWORD "ANSWERS J And he insists that the bar area will be staffed by trained servers familiar with techniques for inter- vention in the case of excess drinking. In addi- tion, a food and beverage manager will oversee the issue, he said.g "Management is not going to go out and make this kind of investment and not have it run in a professional manner," said Mr. Steiner. "We're going to open in a couple of months; we want to do everything right." He called the ability to serve guests liquor and industry standard that shouldnt be denied the Great Blue Heron.
