"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" Macker event in question By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Scugog Township Coun- cil wants to see more vol- unteers and a larger com- mitment from sponsors if the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball tournament is to return to Port Perry next summer. Although those involved were praised highly for their running of the tour- nament it did not show a profit as was hoged. visory Board held the tour- nament in Augu st as a fundraiser, but lack of cor- porate spbnsors hurt the event. Local sponsors did account for $5,000 of spon- sorships; for which the or- ganizers are very grateful. Three hundred 'people took part ¥# the tourna- ment and organizers feel that number will be dou- bled if it is held a second time. While participants came from Toronto, Lon- don, Hamilton, Goderich, St. Thomas, New York and Michigan, among oth- er places, organizers were disappointed by the turng out from local residents. Organizers are plan- ning the event for two weeks earlier next year so as not to coincide with Mosport events or univer- sity students returning to school. Both had a detri- mental effect on last year's attendance. The organizers projeet- ed more than $57,000 in The Scugog Centre Ad- HOSPITAL' S 50TH ANNIVERSARY. Gail Kerry, Foundation President, Marion Zimmer, Foundation Manager, and Kent Farndale, chair of the 50th anni- versary committee, hold just some of the items from the Hospital Silent Auction held on Saturday evening. The auction was part of the Decades Din- ner Dance, held at Blackstock Rec. Centre, cele- brating the 50th anniversary of Community Memo- rial Hospital. The board will be work- ing towards a total of 150 proposed teams for the event with $15,000 in sponsorship. Council agreed that commitment was needed from both volunteers and sponsors before it was willing to give the go ahead for another year. Mayor Howard Hall be- loves the potential is there for a successful event if people get in- volved. The advisory board has until February to let its in- tentions be known to the Gus Macker Committee and will see no further fi- nancial obligations if the township pulls out of a sec- ond year. 190 290 wiches, Hot H Co, v a Hwy. ) Take-out or Eat-in at the HAT HODGE FALL SPECIAL Monday, Tuesday & Wednesdays Take Out Only Fish & Enive We serve Alaskan Halibut only in our | famous batter.
