Kelly Lown Editorial Comment Tough lesson for an MPP It's been interesting to watch the reaction in the wake of a story recently in which Durham East MPP John O'Toole told a reporter that some of the shine has worn off the experience of being in government. The Tory MPP said he's frustrated with the negative reaction that's met the extreme measures of his government, which was elected with a mandate to do what it takes to reduce the province's deficit by addressing high spending and bloated bureaucracies. He even mused that he might be less than enthusiastic about running for office again when his government's mandate is up in a few years time. He has since reaffirmed his commitment to his job, and to the Common Sense Revolution, in an interview and by way of his column, which is sent out weekly to local papers. But it wasn't before an embarrassing moment: A Liberal MPP from Windsor seized upon the story and called on the Premier last week to hold a byelection in Durham East. It was all for show, of course, but MPP Sandra Pupatello trying to drive home the fact that some people are hurting as a result of the Tory agenda, and that it's the job of an MPP -- no matter what his or her affiliation -- to bring that to the attention of the government. That's a reasonable point, but the real lesson for Mr. O'Toole can best be summed up by way of a tried and true politcal saw: It's a hell of a lot easier to be in opposition than in government. And he should be prepared for more in the future. For while the Conservative government has proven itself tough, it's not completely inyulnerable to attack. And as the revolution rolls on, more will be taking aim. "This is a five-year plan," Mr. O'Toole says of the agenda. In for a penny, in for a pound. Mr. Mills takes exception to Mr. O'Toole's "grip- ing" about negative public feedback, a heavy workload, and lack of influenge. wi I clearly recall that Mr. Mills almost con- t stantly used his weekly newspaper column. as al platform for whining about his workload, the s negative feedback he received from the public = 45YEARSAGO Thursday, November 8, 1951 Mrs. Ray Munro and Mrs. R.
