"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" He shows films in Port, Blackstock Dedicated movie man has entertained kids for years By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star © Since 1975 projectionist Dieter Lill has been entertain- ing young audiences at the Latcham Centre. This Friday evening (Nov. 15) Mr. Lill will be hi Jack starring Robin Williams. Then, in a couple more weeks he'll return again on Nov. 29 and present Matilda, starring Danny DeVito. Ifany of his young audiences can't make it out to either of these nights, then you can catch ore movies the follow- ing Saturday at the Community Hall in Blackstock. The film industry hasn't been a life-long career for Mr. Lill. His introduction to movies started in the early 70s when he was working as an auto mechanic. One of his cus- tomers, who worked in the film industry, brought his car in for repairs. It was after the two got talking about movies that Mr. Lill became interested. , In 1973 he quit his job, and he's been showing movies full time since. Although the films are geared for family, he says it's mostly kids who see his pic- tures. And he never shows movies that are tasteless, or show a lot of violence. "I feel it's best to show family rated films, as they're the ones that are most appreciated," he says. Always showing in towns that don't have a movie theatre, for years he's shown screen pictures every spring and fall in Woodville, Millbrook, Omemee, Port Perry, Blackstock and Uxbridge. But he won't be returning to the latter town, as the movie the- atre there is reopening. He also had a brush with a celebrity this year. While showing Happy Gilmore in the Muskokas over the summer, Mr. Lill met Goldie Hawn when she brought her son to the movies. It's his fondness for children that makes him carry on, cer- PONTIAC GRAND AM $23,630 tainly not the revenue. With tickets selling at $2.50 each, attendance varies each movie night. "Sometimes I have 100 and other times I may have a hand- ful," he says. "It all depends on the weather, the movie -- and the time of year," he shrugs, "but that's show business." Living in Peterborough, Mr. Lill, 61, says he's had a lot of steady customers over the years and hopes to continue showing films. i oe on doing this as long as I can. Next March Mr. Lill plans to return to the Latcham Centre, bringing with him 101 Dalmatians and Hercules, Walt Disney movies.
