Fo "A Family Tradition for 130 Years" His grandson uses the 7A crossing daily - Grandfather challenges seniors to help out fund By Jason Logan Port Perry Star A local man is seeking the support of concerned grandparents to make dona- tions to the 7A crosswalk project. Vic Rout of Port Perry is appealing to grandparents to follow his lead and make donations "on behalf of their grandchil- dren." Parents are attempting to raise $10,000, their share of the cost to install a safe pe- destrian crossing for school children across 7A east of Old Simcoe Rd. They have dubbed their effort the Light the Way to Safety campaign. Mr. Rout has become involved in the project after seeing the problems of the site in question while waiting for his grandson, David, who is in Grade 4 at R.H. Cornish. The crossing has long been identified as a hazard, and was the site of a fatal accident 13 years ago. Other close hi have occurred, some of them recent- y. "I know how serious a problem this is," said Mr. Rout, who was quick to explain that his effort is "no reflection on the crossing guard. He does a heck of a job, buteven heis at risk." Mr. Rout knows what it is like to lose a loved one in a traffic accident; his brother was hit and killed by a car just over 50 years ago. Now Mr. Rout would like to help prevent any similar occurrences at the Port Perry crossing. Mr. Rout anticipates an excellent re- sponse from the grandparents: "I think it will be great." Mr. Rout also wishes to stress that he is not only appealing to those grandparents who live in the community, but also to any who may live outside of Port Perry and wish to lend a helping hand. The crossing is to be funded by the pro- vincial Ministry of Transportation, Scu- gog township and parents pf children at- tending R.H. Cornish. The parents have been given an interest-free loan by the Durham Board of Education, and are A Port Perry doctor has unveiled to the community his vision for more effective health care delivery. Dr. John Stewart of Port Perry Medical Associates hosted a public meeting last week during which he outlined a pilot project he hopes will result in guidelines for more effective use of antibiotics. The Pilot for Appropriate Anti- Infective Community Therapy (PAACT) initiative aims to make better use of medications, and improve the lines of communication among doctors, phar- macists and patients, said Dr. Stewart. He was one of the doctors who helped bring about the Ontario Anti-Infective Guidelines, adopted by the province m1994. The results of consultation here -- $97 -- can eventually be of benefit to other communities, Dr. Stewart added, noting that any guidelines must be the result-of a community effort "Guidelines are a great tool for improving the prescribing practices of physicians, but they only work if the doctors believe in them, the pharma cists support them, and patients accept Community forum is held Sewart unveils PAACT plan they should be available in March of making an effort to raise all they need to pay it back in their current effort. Diane Martin, committee chair of the 7A crosswalk project, said the effort has been boosted by a number of donations ang challenges. Thereis now $1,100in the fund. i Mrs. Martin said that merchants of the Port Perry Plaza will be displaying stu- dent posters to advertise fundraising and will also be installing donation jars inside of their stores to accept contributions. In addition, there have been a number of other efforts: 0 The School Advisory Council at Prince Albert P.S. has issued a challenge to other SACs in the township to contribute $100 each. J Port Perry Auto Glass has issued a challenge to other merchants, and it's been answered so far by Monte Cario Hair Design; Mr. Submarine; Trader Sam's; Joe's Pizza; the CIBC and Laurentian Bank; KCI Gas and Variety; Penny and Campbell Associates; Techstar Plastics, and Coldwell Banker Realty. 0 The Girl Guides and Boy Scouts in Port Perry have also made donations. Everyone involved in the project, includ- ing Durham East MPP John O'Toole, is pushing for the crosswalk to be installed before Christmas when road conditions will be worse and when traffic due to holi- day shopping will be greater. Cheques made out to "7A Crosswalk Project" can still be dropped off at any of the schools in Port Perry as well as Prince Albert P.S. and,the Royal Bank in Port Perry. Anyone who is not able to leave their house and wishes to contribute can call Mrs. Martin at 985-3388 or Lynn Goode at 985-9544, who will be happy to pick up do- nations. Community fundraising is a primary form of support for the project. "We've all got one cause in mind," says Mr. Rout, "and that's saving the lives of our kids." them," he said. The Port Perry model is being tested in hopes it can recommend cost-saving measures, but ensuring the focus is on optimal patient care, said Dr. Stewart. It will focus on education, and evaluate whether guidelines actually do improve health outcomes. Over-prescription of antibiotics is a global concern; it is becoming apparent that some bacteria are becoming resis- tant to the drugs. An evaluation of the way doctors in Port Perry have prescribed the anti- infectives, and for what conditions, could lead to the establishment of guidelines, said Dr. Stewart. ~ He added that the Port clinic isn't being targeted for poor use of antibi- otics; rather, it's an ideal source of information because it is a central location, staffed by a number of doctors, who have records on thousands of patients over a number of years. About 50 people came out to last Monday night's meeting at Town Hall 1873 to listen to Dr. Stewart's presen- tation, and ask questions. Dr. Stewart said he has more information sessions planned as the project continues. Vic Rout with his grandson, David Stewart.
