¢ "A Family Tradition for 130 Years" Out of gas Local dealer gives up pumps in face of huge upgrading By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star They've torn out the gas pumps at the Causeway Service Station on Hwy. TA. Ed Stichmann, who rents the property west of Blackstock and has run his auto repair business there for the past four years, said last week that safety features demanded by the Ministry of Envi- ronment were just too costly. So his landlord de- cided that the pumps had to go. "It doesn't warrant (the expense) for the return on jt," said Mr. Stichmann. He makes between one and three cents profit on each litre of gas he pumps. Still, income from the pumps has been a signifi- cant portion of his busi- ness, and he said loss of the pumps will be "quite large". Mr. Stichmann's not alone. Also last week, the oe *% JRC ES R@CK'S pumps ag.the Petro Cana- da Tt in Nestleton were blocked off. Station owner Mark Malcolm didn't want to comment on his decision to close the pumps. But Mr. Stichmann said the ministry require- ments, which are health and environmentally- related, are being imposed throughout the industry. "There's upgrading that need to be done here by January first by a bunch of these gas stations," he said. He didn't have the actu- al price tag for the im- provements required at his locations, but said they included: a Installation of spill containers . under the pumpisland; a Installation of a stop- fill valve on the stations tanks that allows just 95 per cent of the tanks to be filled; that prevents spill- age; . a Replacement. of one of Zana 57 bras and underwear by Wonderbra, Playtex and Daisyfresh - Sale Ends Sunday, December 1 - SSG al gO £ the provincial e only station to the high repair c older gas tanks: Ed Stichmann, seen here at his Causeway Service Centre on Hwy. 7A east of Port Perry, has shut down his gas pumps rather than shell out thousands of dollars for upgrading required by hell depend toa dated to meet the code, but : gree on his estab it just wasn't feasible," ; said Mr. Stichmann. clientele for « He added that hisrepair business.
