"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" Chambe r forced to change parade route as can't be By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Organizers of Port Perry's Santa Claus parade were sent back to the drawing board Monday when they were denied permission to include Hwy 7A as part of their route. A disappointed Linda Parent, chair of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce commPtee that's organizing the parade, said the parade will have to take Casimir St. from Simcoe to Water instead of the highway. She said organizers * learned at a meeting yes- terday that neither police nor Ministry of Transportation officials have the authority to close the King's Highway for the parade, which takes place Saturday afternoon. "We don't have any other choice; we have to change the route," Mrs. Parent said yesterday, adding it's a disappoint- ELEY pA -- - vd 4 5 Hwy. 7A closed ment to have excluded the merchants on 7A who have contributed toward this year's parade. It's also a blow to com- mittee members, who came up with the contro- versial scheme to change the parade route as a means of including more people, and breathing life into the parade, she said. The new route was soundly criticized at a Seugog Township council meeting last week, as council members predict- ed traffic chaos. "Everybody as a com- mittee has worked hours and hours and hours try- ing to do what everybody wanted," said Mrs. Parent. "It's disappointing, to say the least. We put a lot of work into making this bigger and better." On the bright side, there are 58 entries in this year's parade, with some new bands and other attractions.
