The argument goes like this: The events attract professional anglers, and often spectators, all of whom come to the area and spend money; they may be back in the future to spend more. . But what is the cost to the lake, and the fish population that is so important to the tournaments? In an article in today's Star, writer John McClelland quotes a number of sources who recognize the value of the tournaments, but raise very real concerns about the effect they have on fish populations. One figure that's talked about is a 20 per cent mortality rate for fish hauled in during catch and release tournaments. That's a hefty percentage when you take into account the sheer numbers of fish being hauled out of the water during the course of a weekend tournament. And it's something for the township to consider -- the long-term viability of the fish population versus the flash of tournaments -- as councillors approach the question of allowing Bassmania to use municipal waterfront property this summer. The solution might be to allow the tournament to come, promote the township, "and allow everybody to have a good time -- as long as they adhere to rules, based on local conditions and compiled by knowledgeable sources such as the members of the Kawartha Fisheries Association. Tournament orgainzers want their events to be successful, and to be seen as promoting conservation and envirgnmental protection. Let's welcome them to town, and give them pointers on how to do just that. REMEMBER DUE To OuR FiLeS BEING OUT OF SEQUENCE THIS WEEK REMEMBER WHEN WILL HIGHLIGHT THE EVENTS OF 10 YEARS AGO ONLY.
