The holiday season is, unfortunately, a time at which it's deemed okay to make merry with the aid of some bottled stimulation, more perhaps than at other times. The policy aims to avoid township liability in 'the event of death or disability by avoiding such tragedies. To that end, it's good: If all the bases are covered, evreryone ought to make it home safe and sound. If they don't, it can be hoped that the township is not going to be held liable because its policy guidelines were followed. There are two remaining areas of concern, however, that can't be addressed. One, of course, is the fact that, despite any precautions that can be taken, some fool will get drunk enough to hurt himself or somebody else. The other is the loony liability settlements of late which have made the host of any party responsible for virtually any stupid and destructive act carried out by a guest. Even in instances where repeated warnings have been issued, findings have been against the server -- read the municipality, and the group which rented its premises -- when it comes to paying up afterward. Such settlements relieve the individual of responsibility, and are incorrect. Choice remains a fundamental part of individualism and freedom. We demand it in our lives, careers," and government.
