13 16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 10, 1996 Members of the Pine Ridge Garden Club bat- tled snowy roads to attend their annual Christmas Party and Awards Night last Tuesday (Dec. 3) eve- ning. Gathering at the Nestle- ton Community Centre, members enjoyed a din- ner, listened to Christmas carols, were given the offi- cial dollar figures for the 1996 year and then watched as seven awards and even more certificates were handed out. The club saw close to 100 of its members on hand for the evening's en- tertainment. The big winner of the evening was Grace Baje- ma, who went home with two of the seven trophies up for grabs. Ms. Bajema collected both the Analda Trophy, for most overall points, and the Newton Trophy, best culture. Other winners during the evening included Ann PORT PERRY STAR CROSSWORD McIntyre who won the Yo- hansen Trophy for the Best Flower Garden; Joe Wygerde won the Yohan- sen Bowl for the Best Veg- etable Garden; the Lillian Smith Trophy, Best Craft Design, went to Fran Binns; Tina Wolters won the John Kingstone Tro- phy for the Best Gladiolus; and Ken Love won the 1996 Extra Mile Award. The awards banquet has been an' annual eve- ning since the club first started in 1977. Members of the club meet once a month except for January and February. The Pine Ridge Garden Club holds three large shows a year, usually in May, July and September; Natural Ingredients where members bringin a variety of items from their own gardens, which are judged by professional judges from an outside or- ganization. ; Besides competing amongst themselves, the club also does a variety of charity work as well in- cluding planting flowers outside the community memorial hospital ~and Nestleton Community Centre. The club members also spend one meeting a year making decorations to put on Meals on Wheels trays during the Christ- mas season as well as hosting a corn roast in Au- gust for local nursing home residents. = European Quality Don't be disappointed with your Christmas Dinner by serving baked goods that might be stale, .
