"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star When Dorothy Farder serves Christmas dinner * this year she won't be catering to her family. Instead the Port Perry woman will be dishing up a delicious turkey dinner, complete with all the trim- mings, to a large group of people she's probably never met before. On Christmas Day, Mrs. Forder will be one of many volunteers serving dinner to 70 people at the St. Vincent's Soup Kitchen in Oshawa. St. Vincent's, which recently marked its sixth anniversary, was founded by a group of people from Oshawa who wanted to help the needy and the home- less. After a diligent search a vacant space was found in the basement of an office building at 51 King St., and it's remained there since. In those initial years volunteers would cook the entire meals "from beginning to end" in their own homes, then deliver the dinners to St. Vincent's to feed as many as 60 men, women and children. Ruth Puckrin, the Kifchens' Assistant Administrator, says a lot has changedisince those early years. The kitchens are now equipped with a huge walk- in fridge and freezer and a "very large" industrial stove is there to cook on. While the main portion of the meals is precooked and donated by several busi- nesses and organizations, there's always mounds of vegetables for the volunteers to peel and prepare for the 60 to 70 people who visit daily. Last month Mrs. Forder was the first volunteer to sign up for a shift on Christmas Day, Mrs. Puckrin said. 5 Christmas "because it was their turn laws", so she decided this would b would help make Christmas a special else.
