4- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 17, 1996 Christmas drive for needy continuing at food bank By Chris Hall Port Perry Star While the number of people needing assistance through the Operation Scugog food bank hasn't increased over the past year, the need has not decreased. Operation Scugog volunteer Ann Wanninkhof said the food bank is at one of its busiest times of the year with the arrival of the Christmas season, and all donations are greatly appreciat- ed. "Everything is going the way we want it to right now ingegards to the drop-offs," said Ms. Wanninkhof. "There is always a need for food, and I think the drop-off points are a great idea in helping the food bank." The food bank is helping close to 165 families at the present time and Mrs. Warnninkhof adds that the shelves are getting a little empty. "We-never send anyone away," she said, adding that local stores, such as the area's grocers, are very helpful in donating food for the needy. Besides looking after the local food bank, Ms. Wanninkhof also helps out with the Loaves and Fishes organization in Uxbridge. Operation Scugog's food bank is located on Simcoe St. at the Kinsmen Hall and is open every Wednesday between p.m. and 4 p.m. Drop-off points can be found at the following locations in Port Perry during the Christmas season: The Bank of Montreal; The Royal Bank; QCIBC; J Country Style Donuts locations in Port Perry and Manchester; Jand at the Port Perry Star office. In addition, numerous schools, groups and organizations have held their own drives to help stock the shelves at the food bank.
