A By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star For many years Milenko Samardzic has dreamed of bringing his family to Canada. Through the sponsorship of the Port Perry and Prince Albert United Churches, that, dream has become a reality. On Dec. 18 the Bosnian family was met at Pearson Airport by a delegation from the two churches - Ed Daigle, Lindsay Gibson, Pat Bird and her husband, Gord. Many United Churches across the coun- try have been sponsoring refugee families from the war-torn former Yugoslavia. Most of these people have lost everything. After being forcibly uprooted from their homes during ethnic cleansing campaigns, they've had little chance of returning to their homeland. Such is the case with Milenko Samardzic, his wife, Ruzica, and their sons, Bojan, 12, and Igor, 16. Living in Bosnia when war broke out in Yugoslavia during the early 90s,yMr. Samardzic says his family feared for their lives and considered moving to Serbia. Not an easy decision, but a necessary one if they were going to survive.
