Port Perry man embarks on mission to Costa Rica By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A 21-year-old Port Perry man is about to get his wish to travel outside of Canada and help people in need. Now in his third year of studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Tim Wilbur is preparing to depart to Costa Rica, South America early next year and participate in Youth Challenge International. The philosophy and international justice and human rights student was selected as one of the 100 young adults in Canada to travel south and pro- vide a helping hand in underdeveloped towns. Jetting out of Pearson International Airport on May 15, Mr. Wilbur is uncertain where the plane will touch down or where he will be put to work. "Once we get to Costa Rica they'll tell us where we are to go. We don't know until we get there," he said, adding that there are seven other students from McMaster joining him for the adventure. There are many differ- ent projects that could employ him for his lengthy stay includin construction, educationa programs and environ- mental concerns, all depending on the commu- nity's needs. "I want to do something productive and meet other people my age with same interests. I also want to help other people," said the young man. The full-time student is currently in the second part of the Youth Challenge program. He attended a selection weekend in October where his skills were test- ed and his abilities were put through a "physically strenuous" test. Now, he must raise $3,750 to help pay for his expedition. He has writ- ten and sent out letters to businesses, organiza- tions and prominent indi- viduals in the area, and is waiting for replies. After returning on July 27, Mr. Wilbur will have to perform 100 hours of community service work as the final portion of the Youth Challenge International program. "So far, of what I've seen, the people here seem very interested in the pro- gram and hopefully they will support me. They've been really receptive," he said, adding that his fam- ily is pleased with his decision. He's planning to take a year off from his studies and continue travelling next year. Then he'll be applying to medical school at McMaster. CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR A student at McMaster University in Hamilton, 21-year-old Tim Wilbur is looking forward to doing some volunteer work in Costa Rica next year. Through Youth Challenge International, Mr. Wil- bur will be helping others and he needs help from Port Perry to get there. As for his fundraising attempts, Mr. Wilbur hopes that the community will back their verbal sup- port with a little bit of financial support. "I hope the community can help me out a little. I'd appreciate all the help they can give."
