LE 12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 14, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice " Kinsmen hoping move's the answer for race SUCCESS From Page 1 competitionon." The club also wants the races to be profitable as a fundraiser for the commu- nity. After already losing $20,000 during the past three years, the club could not afford to lose anymore. Planning began for sled dog derbys when the Kins- men Club became in- volved in the Snow Flake Festival in 1993. The club built on the derby because they felt that it had the most potential in drawing people to Port yearly, and could be an inexpensive family getaway. After the first derby was held in 1994 the Kinsmen were ecstatic, as more than 30,000 people flocked to town to see the event in two days. Sledding enthu- siasts were on hand to view the races, and area stores reaped huge re- wards as spectators strolled around town. Racing began and ended on Queen St., and the ma- jority of the race was held on a three-quarter-mile track on Lake Scugog. Races were planned for 1995 and the outline of the event was to shadow 1994's in hopes of the same success. Mother Na- ture, however, did not cooperate and the race was cancelled because of high winds, and all entry fees were returned. Cold weather in Novem- ber 1995 had the Kins- men's hopes high for their race in the cold months of 1996 but rain fell, forcing the cancellation of the event. Sensing that it was time for a change, the club came to an agreement with Trillium Trails to hold the races there. » Predicting that this will be the best year yet for the event, Mr. Goldberg says that the uniqueness will also help in attracting a large crowd. "This will be an inexpen- sive family getaway that they'll remember, that's for sure. "We're going to have various types of food from schnitzel to ice cream. Be- sides the dog sleds there will also be a luge run and a skating pond. The great part is that everyone can participate in everything." Mr. Goldberg pointed out that the skating is free, but that a donation must be made in order to go for a luge or sled ride. The rides will be conduct- ed by the Durham Cystic Fibrosis Chapter, who will also be on hand to assist % SEDAN '97 ESCORT LX 99 '97 ESCORT LX | WAGON THE ALL NEW AWARD-WINNING FORD ESCORT NEW '97 ESCORT LX SEDAN OR WAGON MONTH LEASE OR PURCHASE FOR $15,795 ~ COMPARE 1997 ESCORT TO CIVIC AND COROLLA with the event. Some of the money raised from the sled dog races will be turned over to the Canadian Cystic Fi- brosis Foundation for re- search, which has received a total of more than $22 million from Kinsmen Clubs across Canada. The event features a a purse of $1,200 and Mr. Goldberg expects more than 50 entrants from Thunder Bay to some Americans. He even hopes a few Europeans come join in the fun. There will three categories of races in the event, as well as a media race and a celebrity race. Reid's Independent Gro- cer will sponsor the six- dog race while the Royal Bank will sponsor the four-dog event. The Hors- ham Corporation will fea- ture the three-dog race. Port Perry's H & R Block is sponsoring the media and celebrity races. Mr. Goldberg is expect- ing a minimum of 20,000 spectators and advises anyone interested in at- tending to follow the Husky Head signs, which will be posted along side the road at major intersec- tions. He also stresses to anyone coming to please leave their pets at home because they will not be permitted admittance with them.
