Thursday, Jan. 9 we vis- ited Uxbridge. Port start- ed quick as Keenan Geer picked the top corner on the first shift. An assist went to Joey Lane. Uxbridge tied it up. Joey Lane chipped the puck up to Chet Martin and Chet sent Justin Shinn down the wing and he found the far corner. Jeff Talmey made it 3-1 with help from Justin Shinn and Kevin Robins. Uxbridge came back to tie on the power play and eventually got the go ahead goal to leave us coming close. Friday night Malmont Farms hosted the Oshawa Canadians. This game was fast paced and fea- tured a new-comer, Matt Kamminga, from the sec- ond entry team. Justin Shinn knocked in Chet Martin's rebound to put Port on the board. Keenan Geer also earned an assist. Justin scored his second goal from Matt Kamminga and Chet. Joey Lane's per- fect pass sent Keenan Geer on abreakaway. Kee- nan went high into the top corner to make it 3-0. Matt Roth got the final goal of the game from Shane Jef- frey and Jordan Froats. Scott Honey was solid in earning the shutout. Saturday, Malmont Farms hosted Stouffville. The visitors scored first on a redirection. Some sharp passing between Pat Lew- 1s and Justin Shinn moved the puck in on the attack. Justin then centered to Chet Martin, who tipped it in to tieit up. The second period was busy but scoreless. In the third, Stouffville got under our crew's skin and found the net. Port lost its cool and the visi- tors capitalized on the ad- vantage and came out on the higher end. CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR ALMOST THERE: The Port Perry High School Senior Boys team went all the way to the final on Saturday but came up short in winning their own tourney. The boys opened up the tournament with a 55-50 win over the Saugeen Royals and a win over West/Park, but lost to Austin in the final. Port Perry's Andy Mitchell, 50, towers over a Saugeen player as he lets a shot go on Friday evening. They faced tough Lindsay squad Loss is playoff warm-up for peewees Friday night the Peewee As played their cross lake rivals the Muskies from Lindsay. Before the game the coaches reminded the players that this was only preparation for the playoffs. With Mike Bla- key out with an injury, Tyler Lee came out to help the As, and all though it was a 4-0 loss it was a good warmup for the following game. Saturday Cobourg Cou- gars came into town. Ten- sion was in the air, and our boys were up for the action with checking by Shem- bri, Timmers, McClennan and Simpson. As Cobourg took the lead early on in the first period. Then in the second eriod, with all guns aba- azing within a span of 20 seconds Port took a 2-1 lead. Two goals scored by Mike LeFort assisted by Tarbotton, Thompson, and Gray. The Port team showed great improvement from the following night. Hot goaltending in the first game by Haugen's Josh Durward earned him the first shutout of the tournament and allowed the team towin 11-Oovera team from Newmarket. Jeff Durward who played a strong first game started things off with his first of three goals. His lin- emates of Brent Henry and Brian Condie earned themselves assists on two , of his three goals. Keith Forbes who centered the second line was a force to be reckoned with. Four of his five goals he scored un- assisted while his winger Donny Morton assisted on his fifth. Sam Quan rifled the puck into the net for his first goal from a play set up by Keith Forbes and Chris Charron. Singles came from Tom Johnston and Chris Char- ron both unassisted. Strong defensive work by Jake Pilkey, Brett Foster, Mark Copithorn, Chris Charron and Bryan How- arth along with effective forechecking from Brad Neary and Spencer were instrumental in this victo- ry. Game two's action saw Haugen's rally back from Uxbridge one goal lead midway through the peri- od. Haugen's Tom John- ston champion the team to a 4-1 victory scoring the first of his two goals with assists going to linemates Brad Neary, Spencer Mar- low and Jake Pilkey. Chris Charron and Keith Forbes scored unassisted singles. Game three, the "A" championship finals saw Port Perry's Haugen's meet Uxbridge's Dollar Plus. Early in the period it was Haugen's Jeff Dur- ward leadership of two quick goals put Port Perry out in the lead. Assists went to linemates Brian Condie, Brent Henry and Bryan Howarth. Uxbridge came back narrowing the lead to one goal. Haugen's Keith Forbes rose to the challenge and scored two goals less than a minute apart. One was unassisted while the other was assist- ed by linemate Sam Quan. Uxbridge kept pressing and their effort paid off as they once again came within one goal of tying the game. With nine min- utes leftin the game it was Haugen's Jeff Durward, taking a pass from Mark Copithorn, shot the puck by the Uxbridge goaltend- er. That's all Haugen's needed as Keith Forbes scored two more goals with Chris Charron and Donny Morton assisting on both. With 42 seconds left in the game Spencer Marlow set up Tom John- son for the final goal of the 8-3 game and Haugen's "A" championship. The team would like to thank the parents and coaches Eric Bird and Ja- son Howarth for their sup- port and encouragement as well as allowing the team to play on such short . notice during a busy time of the year. Also a special thank you to the Uxbridge Novice Convenor Jay Boucher for a well run tournament a fun time was had by all. Whitby, Lions meet On Jan. 11, Whitby Au- towreckers and the Lions Club squared off. The score see-sawed back and forth during the first and second periods. Autowreckers, Jon Tay- lor jumped out to start the ball rolling. Mike McIn- tyre notched the assist. Lucas Fraser answered that one unassisted. Not to be outdone, Hayden Fish put the Wreckers up once more. Chris Boom- hour picked up the assist. Ashley Lucas tied it back up (unassisted). Chris Boomhour put the Wreck- ers one up again thanks to Mike McIntyre and Jon Taylor. Tension was mounting. Lucas F. (from Hayley Campbell, from Ashley) and in the net. Tie game. Teddy Howarth finally put the Lions Club out front. Blake McLaughlin and Mark Vernest each added points to their as- sist stats. Craig Kehoe of the Wreckers, applied the pressure and tied it back up again (unassisted). The Wreckers tried to hold them but, the Lions roar got louder. Ashley (unassisted). Lucas from Mitch Truax. Billy Britt on a beauty centering pass from Graham Hofstetter. Blake (unassisted) and Ashley (unassisted).
