"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 14, 1997 -3 Rural concerns not addressed In deal: local MD By Chris Hall rt Perry Star Although pleased that the province and its doc- tors have come to an inter- im agreement, Port Perry physician Bill Cohoon believes that the real issue was not addressed. "I think that the deal 18 fine," said Dr. Cohoon yesterday. "But it does not address the health care accessibility in rural areas -- such as Port Perry. "They do not recognize the unique health care that family physicians pro- vide. There is an ongoing concern about the avail- ability of facilities for patient care. A very impor- tant decision has to be made about what services are left available in the area." Dr. Cohoon-said that a restructuring committee was supposed to be in Port Perry in January, but that it has been delayed until April or May. Until then, people can only speculate on what services will remain in Port Perry. When asked how he thought the province's doc- HER THHHE -.~ al | rh po = - ST HE a 11 Nerviee, tors felt about the agree- ment, Dr. Cohoon replied that it was not a unani- mous vote. "They were not all pleased. There were still some areas that did not touch on some major con- cerns of Port Perry, and that is rural areas," he said. "The agreement reached dealt with prob- lems of accessibility to areas like Toronto, London and Kingston, but it does not deal well with the uniqueness of rural area. That is because we are a small volume of people in Ontario. "The availability of facilities and availability of funding to have physi- cians here to serve the community were not addressed. The agreement, approved during a week- end vote by the province's doctors, provides more money for services ren- dered; but analysts agree that more procedures will have to be "de-listed" or not covered by OHIP.
