12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 4, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Township will investigate 'corridor' to to Water St. By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Scugog council has agreed to look at ways that will allow Water St. busi- nesses to cash in on the lucrative trade generated by snowmobilers who visit the community. Township parks staff will attempt to provide access from Lake Scugog so that snowmobilers can park their machines in the municipal lot on Water St. and then frequent the restaurants along that thoroughfare. The request came Monday from Dave Hillier, proprietor of the Antrim House Pub, who said snow fencing along the waterfront to keep snowmo- bilers out of Palmer Park has effectively cut them off from the businesses along Water St. : Mr. Hillier suggested a fenced snow- mobile "corridor" from the lake to the parking lot on Water St. would help his establishment and others attract business during the slow winter months. usher sleds restaurants He said business from snowmobilers appears to be "off" so far this winter, and the lack of access from the lake is probably the reason. Council pointed out the fence around the park does two things: It protects the terrain from snowmobile damage, and provides safety for youngsters who use the playground in the winter. "There is no problem getting them to the parking lot," said Regional rep Marilyn Pearce, "But I would sure hate to see them tearing around (Palmer Park) after they leave a restau- rant." But they agreed with Mr. Hillier's suggestion to try to find a way to allow Water St. businesses to take advantage of the large number of snowmobilers who use the lake, especially on week- ends. Parks staff have been told to take a look at the problem this week. Mr. Hillier said members of the Port Perry Snowmobile Club have agreed to assist him and the Township in coming up with a solution. # Ride Safe Ride Sober Snowmobile Safety Awareness Night # Scugog Community Centre, Port Perry Wednesday, February 5, 1997 = 7:00pm to 9:00pm * $ CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR RIDING HIGH: Members of the 2nd Port Perry Sparks enjoyed a night out last Wednesday when they were invited to go sledding on the hill beside The Rail- roadhouse Motor Motel on Scugog St. Junior leader Vicky Wood Is seen here making sure that five-year-old Brittany O'Conner is set to go down the slope.
