Co-sponsored by The Star and Books Galore and More in Port Perry, the contest is a way of inviting our readers to con- tribute their stories in a fun competition for prizes, and recognition. : We're looking for original short pieces of fiction that have not been published before. Entries from two age categories -- Juvenile and Adult -- will be accepted, with prizes going to the top three submissions, as chosen by our judges, in each class. Prizes will be books, sup- plied by Books Galore and More. In addition, The Star will publish the top entry in each of the age categories in upcom- ing issues. If space allows, we may be able to run more of the stories. The contest is open as of now, and the deadline for sub- missions. is 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. All entries must be sent by mail or dropped off at the Port Perry Star office at 188 Mary St. We'll announce the winners by mid to late March. Prizes will be gift certificates at Books Galore and More, and are as follows: $100, $50, and $30 for the top three adult winners, and $60, $40 and $20 for the juvenile category winners. There is no limitation on subject matter or style, but writers must keep in mind that stories and the language there- in must be appropriate for pub- lication in the newspaper. Entries may be rejected or edit- ed if material is deemed inap- propriate. Following are the contest rules and regulations: a Stories must be typewrit- ten and double-spaced. Please submit three entire copies of each story. 0 Attached to each story must be a separate cover sheet with the -_author's name, address and phone number, as well as age. Judges will be aware of only the age category for each submission. a Maximum length of stories will be 1,700 words. 0 Categories for entrants will be Juvenile -- ages 13 to 18 -- and Adult, ages 18 and up. a All readers within those age categories are eligible, with the exception of employees of the Port Perry Star or Books Galore and More, and their immediate relatives. Judges are also excluded from enter- ing. ? Prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third place entrants in each category, as determined by the judges. 0 Judges will work indepen- dently, assigning a score to each story they read, and their decisions will be final. a Deadline for entries is 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, 1997.
