Call it overkill if you want to, but the aftermath of the Graham James case -- he's the coach who pleaded guilty to years of sexual abuse toward two of the teenaged players he was responsible for -- was shattering for minor hockey. Countless reports were filed, in which officials promised to ferret out the abusers who were among their ranks, and impose a fool- proof screening system to prevent any others slipping in. The result was the sense that the hockey fraternity is riddled with potential abusers, who are involved in the sport only for nefarious reasons. And that, as we know, couldn't be further from the truth. The guys who coach hockey -- and they are predominately guys -- are in it for the love of the game, and the satisfaction that comes from working with youngsters toward the achievement of a common goal: winning, or at least trying hard, and having a good time doing it. The pay-off comes when the team trimumphs, and, on a smaller scale, when the kid on the third line scores his first goal; when the youngster who was withdrawn and shy becomes a member of the team, accepted and accepting. The creeps, alas, are going to be there. They've been found in Scouting, in our schools, in church groups. Those who suffer most are the victims, and the volunteers who carry on, whose motives will be questioned by a public that's been appalled once too often. Let's be careful, sure. But let's give the coaches a break, too. REMEMBER 55YEARS AGO Thursday, January 29, 1942 Mr. Fred Christie Jr. was elected president of the Port Perry Fair Board. So desperate for results was the coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the time, he sat some of his key players under large pyramids. The latter use of Pyramid Power raises some important questions:Is it time for Cliff Fletcher to give Pyramid Power a second try, or would it make the situation worse?
