Community and Social Services Minister Janet Ecker, Minister said that a caseload increase usu- ally occurs in the winter months. : She added that with the exception of January1996's caseload decrease, last month's jump has been the small- est January increase in the past 10 years. That's attributable to the government's tougher eligibility rules, anti- fraud measures and the work for welfare program, said the minister. "Our reforms to the welfare system include measures to reduce fraud, the rate reduction, tighter eligibility criteria and implementation of Ontario Works continue to produce results," said Ms. Ecker in a press release. The Scugog Point man is appealing the process, which saw veteran Tory Sam Cureatz take the nom- ination at a meeting in Courtice. After 382 votes were cast at the Durham riding nomination meeting at Courtice High School, Mr. Jones and Mr. Cureatz were deadlocked at 191 votes each. After a recount was held to ensure that the count was accurate, chair- man Roger Wilson was asked to cast a vote to elect the new leader, as rinted in Article 9.7 of the Durham rogressive Conservative Association guideline book. The chairman made his decision and tossed a single tie-breaking vote for Mr. Cureatz. While he says that the chairman interpreted the constitution correctly, Mr. Jones doesn't agree that a right course of action was taken. : "I don't think that the correct section of the con- stitution was quoted," said Mr. Jones, a teacher at Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby. "I wish that wasn't the way the final decision was made. I think that a second ballot should have been held to allow the people to vote again. It's better that the people endorsing the nominees make the choice; the members of the party should have broken the tie." While he won't personally be submitting an appeal, Mr. Jones says that his supporters do plan on filing one with the Party's national director. And Mr. Jones is now questioning his future in politics. "I'm really disappointed with the results of the meeting. We put a lot of effort into the five weeks before the vote, and I don't think that it should have been decided that way. "I've volunteered myself to the democratic process and offered myself to the public and my party. "If my appeal is successful, then I would still be interested in running in the upcoming election. If the appeal doesn't come through though, then I have no plans for the future. Jones Kawartha Diary 2% Milk 4 litre bag $395 Store Sliced Cooked Ham *1°° 1.
