"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" EEN PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 11, 1997 - 15 Prosecution could wind up this week Woman contends she saw photo of suspect in jeans From Page 1 The second robber, also wore a dark balaclava, a beige trench coat and carried a large, black gun, she said. Ms Short's testimony about what happened in the bank was similar to that given earlier in the trial by other bank employees on duty that evening. The shorter of the two robbers did a lot of swear- ing in a loud voice and threatened to shoot some- body if the treasury was not opened for him, she said. The treasury is a term used by bank personnel to describe the inner vault, where large sums of money are kept. Ms Short said the short- . er robber demanded that branch manager Al Knight open the treasury. When he hesitated, the robber asked for a handgun from his accomplice and shot the manager in the leg, she testified. Two bank staff went into the vault room with the robbers and opened the combination locks to the treasury, she said. The $50,0001in cash and the two weapons, a Steyr Aug semi-automatic rifle and a handgun, believed to be a .357 Magnum, have not been recovered. Ms. Short said the rob- ber took the handgun from the waistband in the front of his pants. Earlier testi- mony from a bank employ- ee indicated the gun was in the waistband in the back of the man's pants. There really is a difference Asked by Mr. Zaduk if she heard the taller of the two telling the other rob- ber to calm down and not shoot anybody else, the witness replied no. As to the newspaper photo she insisted she saw after the incident, Ms. Short said it showed two men with their backs to the camera, one of them wearing a sweater and acid wash jeans. She told the court she does not know what news- paper the photo was in as it had been clipped from a paper by her husband at his place of employment.
