Alma Duff, along with Grace Pargeter, Norma Wolfe and Muriel Hoskin now all from Port Perry but formerly from Blackstock returned from a most enjoyable trip along the Mississippi River and including a cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. Muriel and Henry Wotten have returned home from a vacation in Florida. Mabel Cawker of the Nestleton area and long time correspondent for that area passed away last week. Many from here paid their respects and attended the funeral on Saturday. What a gracious lady. She will indeed be missed. Our thoughts go to her three sons and their families. Eileen McLaughlin reports seeing a pair of robins that have returned hoping to find spring in this area. Bet they are surprised at the cold wel- come that awaited them. About 200 attended the Blackstock Lions Club 10th annual Farmer's Night on Thursday evening at the Rec. Centre. The evening opened with welcoming remarks by the evening's chair Lion Blair Martyn followed by the intro- duction of the head table. O'Canada was sung followed by the toast to the Queen and Canada after which the Lions Grace was sung. A delicious roast beef dinner that had been prepared by the Lioness Club Congratulations to the Recorder consort from R.H. Cornish Public School, includ- ing local girls, Ashleigh Sandiford, Logan Schnider and Michelle Zidner. They placed first at the Sunderland Music Festival recently. Seagrave Church News Becky McDonald extin- guished the fourth Lenten candle at the church service on Sunday. The expected speaker, Ralph Goodale, Minister of Agriculture was unable to attend due to weather condi- tions at the Ottawa airport. Our local MP Alex Shepherd rose to the occasion and spoke to the large crowd on matters pertaining to the agricultural sector. He discussed the Pest Management Review Agency and future concerns of farmers. Alex spoke of the importance of agriculture world wide and the challenges of the effects of modern technology in the farm- ing community. Alex assured those in atten- dance if there were questions that he did not know the answer that he would get further infor- mation for them from the min- ister. On the evening of Friday, March 7 at St. John's, Blackstock some 40 people from the various churches of Cartwright came together to celebrate the World Day of Prayer. This year, the focus of the service was on the plight of the people in the divided coun- try cf Korea. Members of each church led various parts of the service. The service had been designed by the World Day of Prayer committee of South Korea. The context of the ser- vice was the not yet fulfilled hope of the Korean people for reunification of their homeland and they had chosen a theme "Like a seed which grows into a tree." In addition to scripture read- ings, prayers and hymns appro- priate to this theme, there was a very meaningful moment when representatives from each of the churches took part in a ritual planting of seeds while Ken Hudson of St. John's explained that the prayers for reunification and for peace in the world were like seeds which would grow into a tree of peace and freedom not only for Koreans but for all people. There was enthusiastic partici- pation in the prayers and in the singing of some well known hymns and a couple of new ones. As befitted the Korean context, the service was punc- tuated from time to time by the sound of a gong. Father Hugh opened the ser- vice with a short prayer, and pronounced the Benediction at the close. Then everybody went to the Parish Hall for refresh- ments and the opportunity for all those persons of the various denominations who had just prayed together to enjoy some good old fashioned social min- gling. Judging from the com- ments, everyone felt moved by the service and is already look- ing forward to the 1998 service which will be hosted by Blackstock United Church. On that occasion, the service will be designed by the churches in Madagascar on the theme "Who is my neighbor?" St. John's Library is now open! On Sunday morning, Father Hugh blessed the new library and thanked librarians Ruth Welham Umphrey and Anne Carmichael for their hard work in acquiring books, cata- loguing them and developing library procedures. The library has a selection of children's books as well as some great reading for adults with works on church history, spiritual exercises and such things as theology, liturgy, etc. Ruth and Anne are very grateful to all those who donated books. They encourage all members of the parish to read these books and they also invite further dona- tions of books. Wendy Bentley has announced that she can take orders for St. John's "Raise the Roof" Easter goodies up to, and including, Sunday, March 16.
