And the mentally ill or unstable, so easy to dismiss as frightening, unsavory or just plain looney, are in need of both. it's unfortunate, but it often takes crisis to generate any discussion of mental ill- ness or disabilities. It is only when condi- tions and their manifestations are ex- plained that we can begin to gain an understanding of the illness, and an ex- planation for behavior that's outside the bounds of what we might consider nor- mal, or aceptable. Such a crisis is being experienced by a local family now. A woman, diagnosed as schizophrenic, is going through a particu- larly rough time in her iliness now. Her illness is causing her to flee and avoid the very people -- family, friends and police -- who want to help her. Rela- tives fear for her safety, and want only for her to come home, where she can be cared for. Knowing these circumstances should put in a different light those we fear and ridicule. Knowing as we do in so many cases that peculiar behavior is not the fault or even the choice of those display- ing it should make us feel compassion, not revulsion. The United Church in Blackstock is hosting a talk by a speaker from the On- tario Friends of Schizophrenics organiza- tion tonight at 7:30. If you'd like to learn more about mental illness and its effects on those around us, please plan to at- tend.
