Carbon monoxide found Station One firefighters were also dispatched to Old Simcoe Rd. when a Carbon Monoxide detector was activat- ed at 5:31 p.m. Stove problems Firefighters from Station Two were sent to Durham Rd. 57 on March 10 around 8:40 a.m. when a stove malfunction was reported. At Immaculate Conception School four years Former principal killed in tragic 401 accident The dangerous driving of two motorists took the fg life of a former E™; Immaculate Conception Catholic School § principal last | Thursday evening in North York. Susan SUSAN McKenna, a 50- mcKENNA year-old Whitby woman, was killed when she and her 21-year-old son Stephen were driving along Highway 401 just before 8 p.m. when the Camaro she was a passenger in swerved to avoid a collision. After losing control, the vehicle crossed three lanes of traffic before crashing into the guard rail on the south side of the westbound express lanes near Allen Rd. The Ontario Provincial Police report that the accident was caused by motorists in a Mercury Topaz and an A.M.C. Renault whose reckless driving forced the Camaro into the barrier. The OPP report that a piece of the guard rail broke through the rear wind- ow of the car, striking Ms. McKenna. Called a "wonderful educator" by her colleagues, John Brown, the superintendent of human resources for the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, says that this is a big loss | for the board, "She will be dearly missed by all the people who knew her; all 1 the staff on the board have been deeply saddened. She was loved by everyone in her community," said Mr. Brown. At the time of the accident Ms. McKenna was the principal at Pickering's St. Anthony Daniel Catholic School and was a respected woman during the 27- and-a-half years she worked in the separate school system. Prior to becoming the principal of the Pickering school, Ms. McKenna served for four years at Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School in Port Perry, the first woman to hold that position. Ms. McKenna also held the vice-principal's position at St. Paul Catholic School in Whitby and was a teacher in various other schools in the region. She is survived by her two . adult children; Jennifer, 24 and Stephen, 21. An Etobicoke man has been charged with criminal negligence and dangerous driving causing death. Police say the driver of the Mercury Topaz fled the scene.
